#STUFF Wednesday, July 26 Chat with Birm

Here at the Big Ten's Media Day in Indianapolis and because of that I won't be writing anything specific on the front page as I attend to a host of other duties but I figured, good internet provided, I can use this time to answer some questions from you guys.

I'll be popping in from here throughout the day until we leave here about 5p.

It'd be great if we can keep it positive! lol.

OT: Michigan issues

Curious about a couple of things about our rival. Michigan was last listed as having 104 scholarship players. By my math that puts them 19 over. Even if there were a few walk-ons who would lose their scholarships and a few medical retirements, how can they 'process' 19 players before the deadline? The other thing that is mysterious is Matt Weiss. It has been 7 months since they put him on leave and started a police investigation. Would have thought that there would be details by now. Anyone heard anything? The two rumors that I have seen: 1. He was stalking Cade McNamara's e-mail to see if he was trying to get other players to leave with him to Iowa. 2. That, with the Michigan grad student strike, that he was trying to get grades changed for players. Neither seems particularly convincing. Any insight on either of these?

Football Question of the Day topics

We know it’s a slow time on the beat, and I’m certain you all want to read more than just spring position previews. So, let’s open it up and bring back Question of the Day to address some of the topics on your minds.

Birm’s recruiting stuff is separate, so let’s keep these focused on the folks currently in the program and Bill or I will tackle them.

Kiyaunta Goodwin?

@Birm @AEllis As a human being, I'm sorry to hear about his family situation. However, from a purely football and culture fit perspective, is it fair to say that Kiyaunta has unfortunately cast himself as a "Ten-Foot Pole Guy" (i.e., Ohio State wouldn't touch him with...) I know that he really butchered the relationship last year, and obviously didn't leave anyone at UK feeling all that good about his year in that program. There also don't seem to be too many regrets following him from Florida. My initial thought is that he lands at Louisville - no academic hurdles to get in the way of eligibility, new coach with a long leash, close to home. Is there ANY chance that we offer an olive branch, or was that bridge burned beyond repair?

#STUFF Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa commits to Notre Dame ... where do the Buckeyes turn

and what do they need to get from Jim Knowles on the recruiting trail.

McCord's Season

Assuming he's the starter this season, what do you think he would need to do to be a one and done guy? Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are heavy favorites to go 1, 2, but there's definitely room for another 1st rounder.

I think he could leave if he gets over 4,000 yards and 40 TDs. I personally think we run the ball more this year and he doesn't get those, but the weapons are there for it to happen.

A little perspective on KVA, ND and recruiting overall

With the predictable mini-meltdown after "losing" KVA, it's important to remember a few things. First, OSU already has two commitments from high 4* LBs, both of whom were heavily recruited by ND.

Second, OSU has commitments from the top 2 players in Indiana, 5* Mylan Graham and Ian Moore. ND offered and obviously wanted both.

Third, OSU has a commitment from the top player in Chicago, 5* Justin Scott, from a private Catholic prep school there. This is an annual high priority territory for ND and Scott was a kid that ND led for and expected to get.

Fourth, OSU has a commitment from Jaylen McClain (a kid I really like), who attends a private Catholic prep school in NJ and has grades good enough to get into Ivy League schools. He's another kid ND expected to land but OSU snagged the week he was supposed to take his official visit there.

ND is having a good year recruiting but they could be having a great year if OSU wasn't absolutely spanking them on a number of guys that ND traditionally targets and signs. If KVA does sign with ND (it's a long time til NSD) then OSU won't win every battle but they've won most of them and hurt ND more than any other school in the country.

Big Nut

Not sure if this has been discussed here before. What are your thoughts on this guy being one of the faces of the program? Pretty much every game he gets air time. Just seems so dated to me. Time to move on. Even see it on those recruit social media posts of the “which fan base going show me the most love?” type, where people respond by posting that guy. Huh? Like that has any appeal to 17 year olds. So many better Buckeye memes.

KVA: Great player, better person

My wife's work is tangential to the ADs office at a school in the SEC. I understand from her that KVA separately telephoned the ILB coach, OLB coach, and DC to thank them for offering him an opportunity to continue his studies and playing career. She said that the coaches were taken aback because while they had offered, he had not visited (be it OV or unofficial). Indeed, they've had basically nil contact since it's been assumed to be OSU, ND, and USC for KVA. Nevertheless, he made the time to personally contact the school to thank them for their interest in an incredibly respectful and professional manner. She consequently heard that he has made similar calls to other schools...leading her to believe that he is personally contacting EVERY school that offered him (including the Kansas, BC, Oregon State, UNLVs of the world) to thank them for providing him with an opportunity and wish them well on their upcoming season. I hope he signs with us, but, regardless, straight class from a young man who I wish nothing but the best regardless of what uniform he wears next year. IF (and big IF) he picks Ohio State, then this is unbelievable testimony to Laurinaitis and Day. KVA does everything the right way.

OT Thread of the Day (July 18, 2023): What number did you wear in sports?

and why?

I started playing ball wearing No. 44 because Eric Davis was my favorite player but eventually switched to 21. My brothers always wore the number that corresponded with their date of birth, and since I was born on October 1—and I have a twin sister—I wore that number because there were two of us on the first.
