OT: Gambling thread

I know people here are from all over the place, but with sports gambling becoming legal in Ohio I’d figure I’d make a thread if people want to share picks, bad beats, etc.

I’ve gotten pretty into it since January 1, but don’t typically bet more than $10-$15. I’m pretty much strictly NBA but obviously have been betting through the NFL playoffs.

Have no idea if this thread will get any traction but 🤷🏻‍♂️

Court OKs Barring High IQs for Cops - this speaks volumes

Police departments regularly refuse to hire people with high IQs, and a federal court ruled that practice is just fine. The police department argued that people with high IQs "could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training."

A few choice excerpts from the article:
  • Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27
  • The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.
  • The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational way to reduce job turnover.

Imagine other professions capping the IQ of those they allow to work in a given industry. Do you want a smart doctor, lawyer, accountant? Nah, I'll take the one that has just a little above average intelligence. You can't make this shit up!

A positive for @moron is that he has no worries about being too smart to join a police force. The question is whether he's smart enough. Since he won't take an IQ test even after questioning mine, he knows his results would be far from stellar. I truly wonder if he has even average intelligence.

Raiola

The more I hear about Dylan the less upset I am about losing him. He is transferring to another High school. seems like a bit of a prima donna. He got beat last year so he is switching teams. If I was a player I wouldnt want to play with him, not knowing if he is going to leave if something doesnt go right. Dont get me wrong you always want the best qb, but the more that comes out the more relieved I am.

01 FEB Coaches Availability

Noticed the discussion around the coaches' media availability today is a bit scattered.

A couple of my takeaways (I've seen Day, Pantoni, and Bailey on youtube so far):

-I think Day will give up play calling, just my impression from the presser, but he said it's still up in the air. He's pretty clearly focused on macro stuff with the program and wants to be more flexible to address things as the pop up in-season.
-Day came across way more aggressive about NIL than Pantoni with respect to recruiting inducement imo. Pantoni remains a very interesting interview every time. Dude is the godfather of recruiting for a reason.
-It's very easy to see what everyone sees in Bailey. I think smart money would be on him being a P5 HC in 10-15 years.

What were your guys thoughts?

Injuries - Is It The Turf?

Should we stick with turf or go back to grass?

  • Turf

  • Grass

I know that it's been discussed in other threads, but is the field turf to blame for the lower body injuries that have plagued the Buckeyes this season? I don't remember this many injuries occurring on the old turf field, or back when the field was grass. The NFLPA recently came out against the type of field turf we just installed this season due to injury concerns.

@AustinWard do you know if the staff or athletic department is looking into the injuries this season? Have they compared the number of injuries this year to other seasons? Would the athletic department even consider replacing a brand-new turf field with grass this soon?

Potential 2023 OSU Returnees (NFL Eligible)

*Updated 1/11/23*
Not big on starting threads but heard a few names in recent DTE podcasts that I wanted to get a grasp on for potential returnees for 2023 that are draft eligible. Would be massive to keep Eich, Chambers and Ransom for next year to keep some of that stability. Also, I know Stover has had a rough end of the season but getting him back again would be huge. Same with Wypler who would keep stability on OL. Obviously all of this can change with CFP performances but here were my impressions below.

Tommy Eich: Expected to return
Steele Chambers: Returning

Lathan Ransom: Expected to return
Miyan Williams: Returning
Stover: Returning

Fleming: I just assume he is staying..
Matthew Jones: . Returning
Hickman: gone
McCallister: gone
Proctor: gone
Luke Wypler: Gone
Paris Johnson: gone

Stroud: gone
JSN: gone

Rucruiting Philosophy for '24 and beyond

Are we headed back towards a more Tressel recruiting plan? There are stronger recruiters in most of our southern/western hotbeds (Florida, Texas, California). Does Ohio State go back to a more regional approach? Tressel would typically get at least 10 recruits from Ohio, another half dozen from areas within the big ten footprint and would only get a few national guys each year. Is this likely? It seems like this is harder with demographic shifts (Ohio stays about the same but southern states keep growing.) But having at least 8 ohio guys each year--six or so right off the bat and then 2-4 more depending on how they develop--might be a better plan than Urban's 5 or so per year. We could go after states with relatively weak teams (Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, New York/New Jersey) but it seems like even there closer powers like USC, Clemson, Penn St. etc. may end up the winners. Do we just cast a broader net with more national developmental guys--the Dewand Jones' and Calvin Simpson Hunts--early and hope they develop? Or do we up our portal game and just plan for 5-7 per class to make up for some of the southern guys we are coming up short on? @Birm I appreciate your insight!

Paging Birm/Austin, CJ rumor

From an Ozone poster he got from Bleacher Report thread, thoughts?:

By CLTBUCKEYE on 14:29:05 01/12/23
he has a good source saying OSU paid Hayden 100k to not transfer to TN and Stover $250k to return. Also paid Henderson an undisclosed amount to not go to USC. MHJ was offered 2 mil from both Texas and Oregon and turned it dow. Last big "know" is Ohio St is offering CJ 4 mil to stay..
