2023 Look Ahead

Is it worth looking ahead to 2023? Probably not today given the Buckeyes still might end up in the playoff, but I do think next year will represent a much more challenging season for Ohio State. There's also going to be a TON of roster turnover so who knows what rosters look like but I always assume Ohio State will have a loaded squad.
  • Ohio State at Indiana - new OSU QB, should be a fun start to the season.
  • Ohio State at Notre Dame - going to be an electric night game (I presume). Freeman in his second year and have to assume they will be a top 10 team.
  • Ohio State at Purdue - look ahead before Penn State... Ohio State hasn't won there since 2013 (only other game was 2018 debacle).
  • Ohio State vs. Penn State - Drew Allar is going to be GOOD.
  • Ohio State at Wisconsin - Fightin' Fickell's probably better than 2022 but not the Wisconsin of old in year 1. Still probably a night game... will be tough.
  • Ohio State vs. Minnesota - week before Michigan, Minnesota D is likely going to be tough, but they don't pass. Look ahead spot for Ohio State.
  • Ohio State at Michigan - all the pressure will be on OSU unless we're out of the Playoff race by that time.
I've always been a sucker for looking ahead at schedules. I know it's suboptimal timing but hey - there's always next year. I think Drew Allar is going to be the best player in the B1G next year.

USC Tackling problems…

Obviously USC’s defense was pretty horrible this year but at the same time they lead the country by far in turnover margin, causing 27 turnovers on the year and only losing 4. This was a big reason they didn’t drop another game or two.

I’m sure everyone also noticed how terrible their tackling was last night and when I was watching the highlights I noticed a lot of the missed tackles were because the defenders were trying to punch or strip the ball instead of actually tackling the guy. It was kind of bizarre and I hadn’t seen anything like it, at least to that degree.

Anyways a guy from the NYT asked Lincoln Riley about it and he got pretty defensive and said he wasn’t going to justify the question with an answer 😂

Is this a Grinch thing?? Did they know their defense was so bad that they came up with this aggressive attack to cause turnovers? It was surprisingly successful much of the year, but failed miserably last night. I just found it funny because Riley clearly didn’t like being asked about it.

Disappointed

As I sit here and think about the disappointment of the last 2 losses to tunn,it hurts, really hurts. But you so called Ohio State fans that criticize players for their performance out to be ashamed of yourself. Sure they get NIL money, and almost everything they need through their scholarships. But remember, they are human beings, young men giving everything they have for the state of Ohio. Looking back at the last 2 year, I believe there were no major discipline problems. So let’s all take a deep breath and be thankful for what that team has given us. A good thing to always keep in mind is before you speak out of frustration, think how this sounds. BE KIND! GO BUCKS!!!!!

I Miss JSN

Torturing myself by re-watching last year's installment of The Game. It's unbelievable how good JSN was - between the Michigan game and the Rose Bowl, he was an absolute BEAST. He went 11 for 127 in The Game, and several of them were wizardry catches on critical 3rd and 4th down conversions.

It's been easy for me to forget how crucial he was to the 2021 offense, and how much different this team would look with him out of the slot, out wide, and out of the backfield. I know it's wishful thinking to see #11 out there on Saturday, but man, he's the definition of a game-changer.

I also know there are more important things to be concerned about this week, but had to share my appreciation for JSN if he is unable to give it ago again for the Scarlet and Gray. Go Bucks, Beat Michigan! Happy Thanksgiving, too 🦃

After a few days to process - here are my random thoughts

I was fortunate or unfortunate enough to be at the game with my family and I refuse to watch it at this point but here are my random thoughts in the game FWIW

other observations:

1. Seems like when we ran tempo we were slicing through them - then we would stop mid drove and everything would bog down tremendously

2. Seems like there were very few progressions on pass plays to the 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th option CJ knew who he wanted to throw to at the snap of the ball…

3. Probably would have won the game in a rainstorm ironically - Knowles ran a scheme meant for a rainstorm

4. The first play 100000% should have been some sort of QB run - just like in 2018 with a QB7 named Haskins who also didn’t love to run…

5. This seemed to be almost a repeat of the ‘96 game but a modern versions - instead of the spring slip we have 5 springs slips - but the same atmosphere and nearly the same start with the weird opening kickoff

6. If you told me prior to the game that we have 4 trips to the red zone and they have one - I wouldn’t know how we could lose

7. If Hickman simply doesn’t face guard on the PI in our end zone at 24-20 - again we may pull this out

8. Is it true our WR’s aren’t at all physical and can’t fight off press coverage? Seemed to be the case - and I was told that their DB’s are grabbing and holding all the time but I couldn’t tell

9. The botched fake punt which happened right in front of me - is a mind boggling window into the chaos within our team - my girls are competitive golfers and we talk all the time about on course strategy and knowing your plan and what other unexpected things may happen - how in the world does Eichenberg not check with the snapper with a verbal password that it’s confirmed the fake was still on - inexcusable

does anyone know what the snap infraction was on the first try when there was the penalty?

10. I also thought we would go against our season long tendencies- fake bubble screens and go up top or fake the jet pass to Xavier and hit stover (if he can catch) on the same side - basically - punish the defense for jumping our routes - instead - we played even more
To our tendencies

11. We need to hire a TTUN staff (I’d call it war department) of 2-3 - only job is to
Watch TTUN film - infuse beating TTUN into our culture - hire Urban hire trees to run it - hire Speilman from the Lions to be like a GM / TTUN aficionado- or Mike Doss or Darron Lee or Troy Smith perhaps even

12. Coach Day is looking down the barrel of losing 3 straight big games - TTUN / Non CFP Bowl / @ND… if that happens - and we lose again to TTUN - there will be quite a hot seat into 2024 - hope I’m wrong here

13. Everything here is fixable but honest personal assessment by staff needs to be done - this was a mid 90’s loss to the TTUN if I have ever seen one

14. Urban and Tress and Earle always had us better in November - Coop was always remember September- our best game this year was Wisconsin in early October - we got worse and worse - that’s concerning

15. I give Hairball all the credit in the world (or his dad or brother Josh - whomever is pulling the strings) as they took a really honest look at both programs and essentially turned modeled their program after what Jim Tressel created - blue collar- ‘mostly 3-4 star recruits with precise attention to detail and discipline… and a renewed focus on the rivalry - hiring the culture guy Biff Poggi was genius - and now they are looking down the barrel at winning their 3rd in a row next year

16. I give Utah a punchers chance tonight - mainly be issue this will be SC’s third straight game against a very physical foe - UCLA / ND and now Utah - this caught up to us last year jn Ann Arbor after playing Purdue and Sparty - and Utah is actually playing the best they have all year with some freshman stepping it up and a UT transfer making waves at running back - may be wishful thinking but Go Utah

Football Potential postseason switch

Obviously it’s within reach for Ohio State to get into the playoff still without too much chaos, and that’s going to determine everything first and foremost.

But if the Buckeyes don’t get any help and wind up in the NY6, I’m told the athletic department is pushing to get Penn State in the Rose Bowl to avoid a return trip and likely soft ticket sales for Washington/Utah rematches. So, it’s absolutely not a foregone conclusion that’s where Ohio State would go, and the program is hoping to land in the Orange Bowl if it doesn’t make the playoff.

Bruce Feldman comments

Bruce Feldman while on the Ryen Russillo pod said that while he was on the sideline during the game near the Wolverine sideline he heard a lot of players and staff members saying things like “These guys are gonna break, we know who they are.” --- that story gave me some concerns and caused a great deal of frustration and as a fan I am not sure how to sit with it... I am trying to get over this and move on like a functional adult, but these kind of stories really get to me.. I am curious if any of the staff members heard similar things while on the field.. I know @Birm is the one on the field taking photos, but just frustrated by where Ohio State is now...

Bruce also talked about general pressures around Ohio State as the HC and how it is possibly weighing on Day a lot.
