Football GAME THOUGHTS: Ohio State 41, Purdue 7

It was nice to see Ohio State get off to a hot start in this one.

  • I thought McCord was good today despite going just 16/28. There were a few dangerous throws on the run, but overall he played well. His receivers didn't help him too much as there were way too many drops.
  • I especially liked the one deep ball to Xavier Johnson that wasn't caught.
  • Tough day for Marv. Solid stat line but some uncharacteristic bobbles and drops.
  • Offensive line took a step in the right direction (especially w/ run blocking), but Josh Fryar's whiff on that strip sack was a terrible look. I certainly still have some big concerns here.
  • I think Dallan Hayden helped the line. I somewhat understand why they want to redshirt (could lose three backs), but he certainly seems to find the hole better than the other guys.
  • I admittedly didn't watch Hayden much in pass protection so I'm not sure how he looked doing that.
  • I especially liked some of the counters.
  • I didn't mind the Devin Brown package at all. Obviously you can't fumble going into the end zone like that, though.
  • Loved seeing Tate and Inniss get some action.
  • Minor gripe with regard to leaving Marv in the game as long as they did.

  • Simon > Chambers right now and I don't think it's particularly close.
  • Eichenberg was solid. Nice bounce back after a few rough outings.
  • Tyleik Williams stock is really on the rise.
  • Overall the DL was great and took advantage of a bad (and injured) Purdue OL.
  • The defense kinda fell asleep on that final first-half drive. A blatant hold on Mike Hall wasn't called (per usual) and I have no idea why JT was out for most of the drive. They were immediately better when he came back in and Purdue didn't get any points.
  • I didn't notice any real problems in the secondary. Igbinosun gave up the score on the slant but whatever.
  • Denzel Burke was great again and I really hope that injury isn't serious.
  • Jermaine Mathews brings some serious energy to the field every time he's in the game. He's also a terror on special teams.
  • Too many dumb penalties on special teams. The punt downed at the 2-yard line was great, but this performance isn't going to help Parker Fleming's public image.
  • The Peacock picture quality was great. Everything else sucked. The broadcast missed multiple plays and the announcers had zero enthusiasm.

#STUFF Four-Star 2025 cornerback Blake Woodby commits to Ohio State

The Baltimore native is rated as the nation's #5 corner and #31 overall prospect. Tim Walton continues to be very good at his job. Devin Sanchez, Mark Zackery, and Dorian Brew (who may end up at safety) are among the top remaining corner targets for 2025.

Game Thread GAME THREAD: No. 4 Ohio State vs. Maryland **12PM on FOX**

Hello. Ohio State plays Maryland today. Ryan Day doesn't like Mike Locksley. Maryland has a good offense but hasn't played anyone. @Birm has been comparing Taulia to Josh Allen, Peyton Manning, and Jalen Hurts. My prediction is Ohio State 47, Maryland 23.

I heard you can watch this in 4K on the FOX Sports app. I got rid of the Youtube TV package that has 4K, so I'm gonna see if it is in fact available (for free) on the FOX app.

Portal

In some of the discussion about next year, people add something like “….and we’ll add someone from the portal”. Like that’s easy or we’ve had recent success. The recent transfers have been pretty mid. McAllister was a unique situation because he was Knowels guy and knew the system, but it’s certainly debatable whether he deserved the snaps he got. And how things work out one year can impact your portal recruiting the next. Tywone Malone and Ja’had Carter not getting a whiff of the field is now a data point that will be considered. The Buckeyes will probably never guarantee playing time, but there are schools with the same NIL resources that will. Point is that it’s not certain and maybe even unlikely that experienced help is on the way.

Big Ten will have 9 Friday Games in 2024, I understand TV money is crucial for schools but really is the money worth it? All our Big games are at Noon now, which makes it tough for recruits to come to our games when they live out of state. And between 3 networks, probably soon to have games on Paramount Plus and Peacock. I just see TV slowly changing college football. For better or worse the TV networks are controlling the sport.
