2019 Ripple Effect

Does anyone else still feel some of their anxiety this year is related to 2019? Especially in regards to a national championship? For me when the buckeyes were such a juggernaut in 2019 I thought that was their year to win it all. The way the Clemson game went down was rough. But then I thought, ok, next year they are back in it with a very good offense. Then covid hit and the season was cut short. They had some great moments (see Clemson) but the season overall felt robbed. Then next year we saw the offense couldn’t fix the defensive woes and that held us back. Finally Day made the changes on D and the offense had all the pieces seemingly in place. So, whether fair or not my mind was back in 2019 mode. I wonder if Day had that in mind as well? He has been so close but just has not gotten over the hump. Now, of course the 2 losses to ttun doesn’t help. Still hoping this is the year they win it all. Anyways I’ve felt like this has been a very long season since 2019 waiting for that national championship. Wondering if others feel the same?

Football Ohio State as the underdog

Ryan Day wants a team that plays loose and doesn’t press now that it has new life in the CFP. Perhaps embracing the underdog role can help the Buckeyes find the best version of themselves

Roster Building

I have been thinking about the impact of the transfer portal in regards to roster building and culture. Specifically the dangers of taking someone in the transfer portal. It’s always tempting to bring in someone new, especially if the talent is obvious. But there are repercussions. You’re sending the message to your players at that position that you don’t think they are good enough. You are asking these kids to put in the work and be totally committed to the program (“we’re a FAMILY”) and then turning around and showing that you have zero loyalty to them. A lot of times, the team leaders aren’t the best players. You think that those people are going to be happy if you bring someone in that destroys any chance they have of playing? And you’d better hope that you have impeccable intel on the kids you bring in, because there may well be a reason why it didn’t work out with their old team. I think it’s short term gain but painful for the longer term. Think Michigan State. Really curious to see the long term effects on places like Miami that are clearly churning their roster and banking on the transfer portal. I think culture matters, and I’m glad that OSU seems to believe so as well. (I think upfront NIL has a similar impact)

What exactly does an Offensive Coordinator do?

I am a bit confused about what an OC does. I would think he would oversee all aspects of the offense thereby requiring someone who was familiar with all aspects. I would also assume he would call the plays like Knowles does on D. Of all the internal candidates I'd say Frye is the most qualified being a line coach and having held the job under Chip Kelly.
IF Day doesn't give up the play calling he seems like the most likely guy to me because I can't see an outside experienced OC taking the job sans play calling responsibilities. I get the sentiment that Hartline is the best choice but I don't know if he has the overall experience to do the job especially if Day wants to give up play calling. I also don't like the co-coordinator idea. Someone has to be responsible. Thoughts?

Open: Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Position

My top choice:

Joe Brady - QB Coach - Buffalo Bills

His work at LSU with Joe Burrow was among the most impressive, well-coordinated offenses in college football history.

Putting Joe Brady under Ryan Day, and alongside Brian Hartline, would produce the most deadly offensive staff this university has ever had.

I want to see it happen. Badly.

Scheme question relating to WRs for staff

@Birm @AustinWard @Bill Landis hey! So, IF JSN doesn’t play. I want to get y’all’s thoughts on how CFP prep (re: more practices) could allow for another WR to play and impact the game. This question comes from the vein of I believe JSN developed a lot of his Football IQ and coverage recognition due to the level of defenses he faced in Texas while in high school and the extensive amount of 7v7 drills he has done over time.

Disclaimer: I know JSN is special and 1 of 1 and unique and all that.

Okay. I’m curious about Caleb Burton. Any shot that he could see more inclusion? Any shot he could display similar skills on the field that could help the offense?
