2017: Brian Hartline joins the team as a grad assistant.
2018: Zach Smith Is let go and Hartline is named the interim WR coach.
At the end of last year - December 2018 - Hartline is officially named our WR coach.
Draft preparation:
1) He contributed greatly to Haskins and our WRs decimating teams with our high powered passing and RECEIVING attack.
2) He also greatly contributed to Terry McLaurin’s meteoric rise,. And then he has really
3) Helped Parris Campbell improve his hands significantly... so Parris has become a much more reliable and complete WR ...
4) NOW BOTH Campbell and McLaurin look to be 2 of the top 5 WRs in an extremely deep 2019 draft.....both will now likely be going anywhere from the late first round to the late 2nd round (Both likely top 64 picks).
5) Johnnie Dixon also looks poised to be a late round 6th -7th round pick. And although a few years ago, he looked like a medical casualty (bad knees)... now most of us think he is likely to make a roster - or at least a practice squad
Our WR’s this year (I think is the most talented WR group in the country).
6) He was able to get KJ Hill to return and it now it looks like we will be rolling out these 11 studs game 1:
X: Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor, Jaylen Harris, and a MUCH improved Elijaah Gardiner
Z: Chris Olave or Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams
H: KJ Hill, Jaelen Gill, CJ Saunders, Kamryn Babb
* He hung onto Garrett Wilson who looks like he could be the #1 WR recruit in the country and will play immediately. And then he also closed Jameson Williams in a close battle - over Alabama.
2020 Recruits:
We lead for these 5:
* #1 WR in the country Julian Fleming from Pennsylvania (80%)
* #2 -#3 WR in the country Rakim
Jarrett from D.C. (who Nevada believes is already a slilent verbal and in.. so I give him a (98%) likelihood.
* #3 -#7 WR Marcus Rosemy (75%) the #1 WR in Florida
* #9-#15 WR Gee Scott Jr. (100% committed) State of Washington....for the love of God.. and who is constantly gushing over the Buckeyes.
* #16-#25 WR Jaxon Smith Njigba one of the top prospects in Texas (100% - committed).
As a plan B to those top 5. And as Marc just noted in the Skull Session....he just had top top #25 WR from California LV Buntley-Shelton in.. and of course LV was blown away. There is a long ways to go here.. I know... But with Blue Smith leaving (due to depth chart issues) and with Hill, Mack and Victor heading to the NFL, it appears we might take up to 5 WRs next year.
So he’s already leading for the top WR’s from Pennsylvania, the state of Washington, Florida, the Baltimore/ DC / Virginia area and one of top WR’s out of Texas - again this year.
Then for 2021:
* We lead for likely 5 star and likely #1 WR in the country Marvin Harrison Jr.
* Wr lead for the #1 WR in Ohio Lorenzo Styles Jr.
* We lead for the #2 WR in Ohio Jayden Ballard.
I “bet” now that Harltline:
1) Puts at least another 2 more Buckeyes (and 3 if Victor goes (I can’t recall if Victor has 1 more year of eligibility...?!? or is this it?) in the NFL next year.
2) That we will have the #1 WR class in the country in 2020.... and finally
3) That we will have the #1 WR class in 2021
We have to - of course - give both Zach Smith and Urban Meyer much of the credit for the guys heading to the NFL this year...and then also obviously for the incredible stable of talent we already have on the team this year.
But Harttline closed both Garrett Wilson and Jameson Williams without Meyer (with Day’s help of course).
And in just a VERY short period....these classes he’s putting together for 2020 and 2021...are shaping up to be tops in the nation.
I just thought some of you might enjoy being reminded that Hartline has done ALL of this....while being our official WR coach for only the last 4.5 months....
Not a bad start...
