Beyond the titles, I think of past OSU coaches as each having distinct moments where they took down a big time for; national caliber juggernaut, and an OSU Nemesis. As OSU fans, we know the historic significance these wins, and the air they cleared:
Meyer takes down the road unbeatable Bama, and also takes down USC (plus scUM).
Tressel takes down the team of the 90’s: Miami, in addition to hammering scUM...and also beats upstart Oregon in the Rose. And of course, he exorcised the demons of 30 years of near misses in closing the deal for a NT.
EVEN Cooper, the man of scUM INFAMY, took down Notre Dame, twice, in Dominating Fashion...which at the time of Lou Holtz’s run, was absolutely HUGE. And he accomplished what Earle couldn’t, in recapturing a Rose Bowl Trophy.
