had an interesting conversation with someone close to the OSU program regarding OSU's decision to start phasing out the QB run as part of their base game plan...
here is what he had to say....
"The entire genesis of this discussion came at the end of Meyer's first season here at Ohio State. Part of the process that they do is exit interviews with all the players and staff to kind of get their final perspectives on that year on things to improve, things to change, and just a general perspective on the program...
one of the comments in the summary section was "our system is very physically demanding on our quarterbacks".
This got Meyer to thinking about what is was doing---and since that point in time he has been sensitive to what happens at that position, and watches things very closely.
He then proceeded to see Braxton Miller go down---and JT Barrett go down--and despite the fact that he won the championship with his third string QB--it still nagged at him.
Now people don't realize how close that Meyer and Chip Kelly of the Eagles have become over the years.. Chip was the guy that brought home the entire "2000 reps" thing to Meyer--and Chip has featured a running QB for years---so what better resource to go to then Chip.
When Chip and Meyer got together this off season this topic was front and center. And Kelly's perspective on this was an interesting one. Kelly is a data guy, and he too had been looking at how many times he had lost a QB during the season, and he had come to the conclusion that unless he changed the way he utilized his quarterback in the college game that it was at least 50-50 that he would have to be playing his backup for a substantial period of time--and probably 15% that he might have to go to his third string...
with that kind of math staring him in the face, Kelly had decided that his advice would be to modify the system in a way that limited the amount of contact at the QB position----and to try and get the ball to other playmakers more often....
clearly Meyer has taken this to heart---and thus, we are seeing the OSU offense circa 2015 in somewhat of a transition period.....
this isn't so much a "who is playing QB thing"---rather its a "Meyer wants to try and keep his QB's healthy and upright" thing...."
thought it was interesting....
