Gov.: Two students dead, 12 other people wounded in Kentucky high school shooting

Two students were killed and 12 other people were wounded during a shooting at a Kentucky high school, the state’s governor said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Gov. Matt Bevin said the suspected shooter, a 15-year-old boy, was apprehended at the scene and will face murder and attempted murder charges. The victims include a 15-year-old girl, pronounced dead at the high school, and a 15-year-old boy, who died at a hospital. Bevin said 12 other people were shot.
In his tweet, Bevin called the shooting at Marshall County High School “tragic” and said a suspect was in custody. “Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS . . . Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded . . . Much yet unknown . . . Please do not speculate or spread hearsay,” he tweeted. “Let’s let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us…”
In another statement posted to Twitter, Bevin again called for support, not speculation about what happened.
“This is a tremendous tragedy and speaks to the heartbreak present in our communities,” the statement said. “It is unbelievable that this would happen in a small, close-knit community like Marshall County. As there is still much unknown, I encourage people to love on each other at this time. Do not speculate, but come alongside each other in support and allow the facts to come out.”
The Kentucky State Police also confirmed the shooting in a Facebook post, writing that there were “multiple victims, one of which has been pronounced dead.” Another Facebook post from the state police confirmed the scene was secure.
Marshall County High School is located in Benton, Ky., about 25 miles southeast of Paducah. The school had 1,300 students in the 2014-2015 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
News of the shooting in Kentucky came just one day after an incident in Texas that left one teen injured. Early Monday morning, police responded to reports of an active shooter at Italy High School, in a town about 50 miles south of Dallas. A 16-year-old opened fire in the cafeteria, police said, wounding a 15-year-old girl who was airlifted to a Dallas hospital. Afterward, authorities took the boy into custody.
