Fox News is determined to discredit minimum-wage increases by doing what Fox News does best – making up facts. A few weeks ago it reported that Seattle’s minimum wage increase (to $11 this year and $15 over the next few years) was causing employees making “too much money to stay on certain welfare programs" to work fewer hours because "the raises [are] pushing them over the income threshold and out of welfare programs like subsidized food, child care, and rent."

Researchers find no basis for that claim, according to Media Matters for America. (Note the claim also advances Fox News' myth that welfare recipients would rather collect handouts than work.)

Another report produced by the conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and promoted by Fox News alleges Seattle’s increased minimum is causing job losses in food service employment. But new data out yesterday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Seattle's food service industry has actually added 1,800 jobs since the start of the year, despite the higher wage.

Fox News (along with right-wing think tanks and Republican candidates) are determined to lie about the minimum wage because their financial patrons don't want America to know the truth. Always follow the money.
