Interesting caller yesterday on the most annoying radio show on XM (yes I know but it's like a drug you can't stop going back no matter how bad you feel after listening)
It was the typical old "SEC is awesome BIG couldn't compete down here" call. Stomach turning discussion about all the ranked SEC schools beating up on each. But then the discussion turned to how "end of season" rankings don't matter - what matters is where teams are ranked when you play them.
So according to the caller the preseason rankings are more important and reliable than rankings after we have actually seen teams play. Which I find interesting and troubling at the same time. The falacy of the preseason polls and how they set up Strength of Schedule, "they've played nobody" arguments.
SEC RANKINGS (Team, Preseason, Now)
AL: 3 - 10
AUB: 6 - UNRANKED
UGA: 9 - UNRANKED
LSU: 14 - 6
MISS: 17 - 13
ARK: 18 - UNRANKED
MIZ: 24 - UNRANKED
TN: 25 - UNRANKED
BIG RANKINGS (Team, Preseason, Now)
OSU: 1 - 1
MSU: 5 - 7
WIS: 20 - UNRANKED
MI: UNRANKED - 12
IO: UNRANKED - 17
NW: UNRANKED - 20
Week 1 the SEC had 7 "Top 25" teams without playing a snap. All based on speculation and the SEC bias. Meanwhile the BIG had 3. Now the SEC has 3 teams ranked in the top 25 while the BIG has 5 in the top 20.
I just found that interesting. Thought I'd share.
