Destroying any institution they can't control': Josh Hawley condemns Democrats for demanding Kavanaugh impeachment
Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley condemned Democrats for their chorus of calls to impeach Justice Brett Kavanaugh amid a new sexual misconduct allegation, and accused the party of seeking to destroy any institution over which they do not wield power.
"You know, they want to impeach Justice Kavanaugh, they want to pack the Supreme Court. I mean, talk about destroying any institution they can’t control," the member of the Senate Judiciary Committee said in an exclusive interview with Hill.TV. "It's really unbelievable. This is a Democrat Party that increasingly is at war with the American Constitution."
After the New York Times published a since-corrected report alleging that Kavanaugh pressed his genitalia against a woman at a drunken Yale party in the 1980s, several 2020 Democratic candidates have demanded an impeachment inquiry against him. The same liberal activist groups that were caught slipping cash to disruptive protesters during his confirmation hearings last fall have also demanded his removal from the high court.
"I mean, they’re willing to destroy an entire branch of government, the independent judiciary, they now want to destroy it. Why? Because it won’t rule the way they want it to," Hawley continued. "I mean, is there anything more dangerous to constitutional government than that way of thinking?"
"My message to my Democrat colleagues would be: 'Look, it's an independent judiciary. Sooner or later, you’ll have your chance to appoint judges to the bench, and you should appoint qualified judges to do so, but don’t destroy people and institutions in order to try to get your way. I mean that’s just not who we are as Americans.'"
