I'm back in Vancouver, Washington after leaving St Augustine this morning. In HOTlanta a rather statuesque blond sits next to me in 1st class and says hi. I ask her if she's heading home and she says she's flying to Portland on business with her boyfriend. After noticing I have Bach's Brandenburg gate queued up on my iPad she tells me she's Austrian and we talk about the composer for a few minutes before she asks what I do for a living. She then tells me she's from Kitzbühel and I tell her that my favorite skier of all time is from there and I say, "Franz Klammer" in my American accent, the way we've always heard it on Wide World of Sports, etc. and she laughs and says, "you mean, Franz Klammer"(like "clammer", same with Franz). Apparently, and unsurprisingly, she knows him and we talked about skiing on powder vs the crap I learned on in the East. Her boyfriend has a meeting with Phil Knight on Tuesday about a big contract, i'm guessing ski equipment but I didn't ask. She was just along for the ride and had driven to Munich(90 mins) and then flew non-stop to Atlanta before catching the flight to Portland where we were greeted by freezing rain and about 1.5 inches of snow. These Northwest people DO NOT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE DRIVING IN SNOW!!!
