COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State rising-sophomores Meechie Johnson Jr. and Zed Key are among 27 players who have accepted invitations to attend the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team training camp. The camp will run June 20-22 on the campus of TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
The 12-member team will represent the USA at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup for Men which is scheduled to be held July 3-11 in Riga and Daugavpils, Latvia. In addition to the USA and host Latvia, teams that will take part in this summer’s U19 World Cup include Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, Lithuania, Mali, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey.
The USA was drawn into Group D, alongside Australia, Mali and Turkey for the July 3-6 FIBA U19 World Cup preliminary round. The USA will open play against Turkey on July 3, followed by Mali on July 4 and close preliminary play against Australia on July 6. The team will be led by TCU head coach Jamie Dixon and Stanford head coach Jerod Haase and Yale head coach James Jones.
Johnson Jr. was a mid-year enrollee and saw action in 17 games over the last half of the year. He made his debut on Jan. 9 at Rutgers and then made the first shot he attempted of his collegiate career, a three-pointer vs. Northwestern on Jan. 19. He made 6-of-12 attempts from 3-point range on the season, including a 2-of-3 effort at No. 8 Iowa on Feb. 4.
Key played in all 31 games during his freshman campaign, averaging 5.2 points and 3.4 rebounds. He made one start against Purdue and had a double-double vs. Cleveland State with a career-high 12 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 61.6% of from the floor (61-of-99) and was second on the team with 22 blocks.
Team USA is the reigning gold medalist at the FIBA U19 World Cup and has won a total of seven gold medals, three silvers and one bronze. Former Buckeye David Lighty captained the silver medal winning team at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship in Novi Sad, Serbia.
