After these last two losses to Michigan, basically all of the attention and panic has been directed at what is wrong with Ohio State and Ryan Day. Very little attention has been focused on what may be right with Michigan. I’ve been of the opinion that after almost getting fired and overhauling his staff, Harbaugh’s last two teams are significantly better than what we are used to seeing. And more importantly, a lot better coached.
Listening to Zach Smith today he was pretty adamant about this same point and went over some stats that supported it. Michigan has always had very good defenses, but their offensive production during Urban Meyer’s tenure was often no where near what it is today.
Obviously that’s not to say we shouldn’t be beating them, and there’s clearly issues that need to be addressed in the program. But at the same time, Urban Meyer was just not facing the same caliber of team that we have the past two years. I have a feeling that the rivalry is going to continue to be competitive as long as Jimmy doesn’t try and bolt to the NFL.
