LOWS:
1) Our offense was atrocious.
2) We had 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles.
3) They play calling was terrible. It got worse as the game went on and it has been both predictable and sluggish all year long.
4) The offensive line was awful and has been terrible so far this year. The run blocking more so than the pass blocking - IMO. More untimely penalties today, they just aren't creating the holes and they didn't man-handle VA Tech, Hawaii and NIU like they did MSU, TSUN, Wisky, Bama and Oregon. Price and Boren in particular, are really off to poor starts.
5) Vannett had a bad drop and just missed 1 or 2 close 3rd down conversions.
6) What is wrong with Cardale? His throwing, running, decision-making, energy, body language, even his handling of snaps and his handoffs are all really bad thus far.
7) What the hell was wrong with our clock management in the 4th quarter? There were at least 4-5 miscues.
8) Barrett was off too. All his throws were late, short or behind the reciever. He looked timid throwing. He also missed some wide open running lanes. He had a bad game too.
9) Ezekiek looks just ok...like our OL, he decimated the best teams in the country last year (with a broken wrist) and he's getting 3-4 yards a carry so far this year. Aside from his 80 yard scamper against VA tech has he had another run over 15 yards?
10) Raekwon had a bad game. And I think he has had 2 poor games now. Their RB had a ton of yards after initial contact right up the middle. I think he is capable of giving us a lot more than he has so far this year.
11) Without Lee's pick 6, we could have easily blown that game to and lost at home being a 34.5 point favorite...
HIGHS:
1) Our defense is awesome
2) Gareon Conley is playing lights out. He is a stud and now we have 2 shutdown corners
3) Darron Lee is a badass. He is a big play waiting to happen.
4) Bosa played great and was really disruptive.
5) Hubbard and Lewis each had 2 great big plays and I really like them both.
6) Washington is playing like a first team All- American.
7) Bell is so instinctive and just flys to the ball.
8) One offensive high - Thomas. Awesome catch. I wish we could get him the ball a lot more.
8) I took some heat last week for saying we could very likely have 7 -1st round draft picks in next years NFL draft. Well if Bosa isn't the top pick, every mock draft has him as a top 5 selection. Washington, Bell, Lee and Thomas have all been late 1st round to early third round guys. I believe you will see all 4 of those guys now in the 1st round on most updated mock draft boards (With Bosa, Ezekiel and Decker - and Jones is probably sliding out of the 1st...We have without question 8 firmly in the 1st round mix).
9) Our punter is likely to get drafted too. He really had two perfect punts in the 4th quarter that should have been pinned down at the NIU 1 yard line.
10) Our kickoffs (as I predicted - after some heated debate last week) were all straight up the middle as deep as Willougby could kick them. So at least for this game, the old strategy of corner placement was completely killed.. And we all didn't have to suffer through those deflating kicks out of bounds / 35 yard line gifts to the opponent. And coincidentally...NIU had 3 of them...
11) We escaped with a win and no one got hurt. We need a big game against W. Michigan and I expect our offense to come out of the funk next week and get some momentum. We better hope so.
Edit:
12) Josh Perry is playing well too. I thought he had a good game.
13) It was nice to see Cam Burrows make that game saving stop. Great play!
14) 9 of our 11 defensive starters will be playing in the NFL. And Schutt and Powell might be...
