There's been some controversy brewing around the Ohio State community lately regarding some proposed developments by Campus Partners, an arm of Ohio State that is involved in building off-campus business areas like the South Campus Gateway.
Recently, Campus Partners has submitted proposals that would wipe out essentially every business between 14th Avenue and 17th Avenue, destroying some places that have been there for over forty years and many other off-campus staples, like Bernie's Bagels, Brenen's Cafe, Too's Under High, and The O Patio. They'd be replacing these unique Ohio State traditions with proposed new projects like a hotel, parking garage, apartment buildings, and a "public square".
What are the board's thoughts on this project? Is it wise to remove some of the few places still around that give Ohio State its own culture and flavor to build a cookie-cutter hotel and simultaneously gentrify one of the most central off-campus areas? Is this a detriment or positive for the university?
