I think perhaps people are misinterpreting this scheduling move, as many seem “upset” about the break w tradition.
IF there is a season, it’s possible there might be a glitch or even a quarantine with a given team. This is why teams have multiple open dates. By scheduling The Game mid-season, it (a) let’s both teams get in “mid-season form” and (b) provides options if a team has a health problem and has to quarantine.

I think it’s clear that the ENTIRE schedule was constructed to insure that the most important game to the entire league actually happens. I believe it’s precisely because of tradition that the schedule is the way it is. The B10 knows what the biggest game of the year is, and a season without it is not an acceptable season.
