Number 1, when someone declares war on a civilian population, it is that ENTIRE civilian population that is on the playing field. When it happens on the homeland. The military cannot defend you during a situation like that, whether it be an army, whether it be terrorists, or anyone individual. Someone is trying to attack you. You have to defend yourself. It is that simple. An armed society if nothing else puts the civilians on an even playing field. This is why slaves could never own guns. This is why the 2nd Amendment is firmly established as the number 1 American tradition (outside of most Americans being badasses generally speaking by dissing European king worship to come to America to get the king stomp on...especially during 1776). If you are a 3rd world country and invaders come in, everybody fights, and you either fight, die, or become enslaved essentially.
