IMO - Not stopping the play clock after 1st downs was not designed to shorten the game to make it safer. It was designed to allow advertisers more time to run commercials. The result was the equivalent of manufacturers reducing the amount of product in the box. Since changing this is not likely to happen, I think the play clock should be reduced by 5 seconds and allowing teams to use helmet communications to get the play in without running players in or having to signal it in. It would provide the consumers with more football and make for more exciting football.
