I thought the discussion of the role of the head coach in Snap Judgements was interesting. I think it is true that Day has too many responsibilities to be both the head coach and offensive coordinator. The discussion brought up some of the priorities of a head coach but I thought missed some. Wonder what other people think. Here is my list:
1. Recruit the best/best-fit players
2. Establish and maintain a culture. Get to know the whole team personally. Coach the coaches on what to emphasize. Make sure that the whole team understands the priorities of being at Ohio State.
3. Be the face of the team for press and, especially, fundraising for NIL
4. Retain players. Numbers 2 and 3 are key to this (know the players personally, have enough NIL to keep them)
5. Have a plan to win each week that involves the offense, defense and special teams.
6. In-game decisisions. Be able to see the big picture in terms of the style of game and time/timeouts, when to take chances and when not to. This would be huge if Day wasn't running the offense. He could do much more clock management, ensuring the plan to win, and having better handle on defense and special teams.
7. Hire, develop, and retain quality coaches.
Many other things but those would be my top 7. I don't think the culture part was talked about nor numbers 4,5, and 7.
Anybody else have thoughts? @Birm @Bill Landis ?
