Are we headed back towards a more Tressel recruiting plan? There are stronger recruiters in most of our southern/western hotbeds (Florida, Texas, California). Does Ohio State go back to a more regional approach? Tressel would typically get at least 10 recruits from Ohio, another half dozen from areas within the big ten footprint and would only get a few national guys each year. Is this likely? It seems like this is harder with demographic shifts (Ohio stays about the same but southern states keep growing.) But having at least 8 ohio guys each year--six or so right off the bat and then 2-4 more depending on how they develop--might be a better plan than Urban's 5 or so per year. We could go after states with relatively weak teams (Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, New York/New Jersey) but it seems like even there closer powers like USC, Clemson, Penn St. etc. may end up the winners. Do we just cast a broader net with more national developmental guys--the Dewand Jones' and Calvin Simpson Hunts--early and hope they develop? Or do we up our portal game and just plan for 5-7 per class to make up for some of the southern guys we are coming up short on? @Birm I appreciate your insight!
