As the ranks of our WW II vets shrink by the day, I have to wonder what Veterans Day might mean to us in the future. If one stops and thinks about it, the WW II vets are the last ones who really defended our country from foreign conquests.
Sure, the veterans from Korea and Vietnam answered the call and went and fought an enemy that was thought to pose a threat to our shores, but in hindsight, we learned that wasn't true. I guess it kind of shows where mass hysteria will get you.
And today, we have future veterans who are fighting a war on a tactic, terror (which will become in hindsight another faux cause), and not a true enemy who would actually threaten us. The funny thing is, we lose more people in this country annually from not fighting those whose ideaology is to defend our 2nd amendment (even though they don't believe in a well-regulated version of that amendment) than it is to defend our domestic tranquility.
Funny times we live in. If you will excuse me though, I think I will check out of all of these "veteran celebrations" after the WW II vets are gone. If others want to wave the flag on Memorial Day, July 4th, 9/11 (hey, a new one to celebrate!), and Veterans Day, go right ahead. It seems to be a god-given right for nationalistic countries, past, present, and future.
