I just came across this and thought it was interesting. Nebraska has a NIL collective called the 1890 Initiative that seems to be almost identical to the 1870 Society. It looks like theirs was started about 6 months earlier in 2022. I don’t know exactly how they are connected, but they seem too similar not to be.
Anyways, both collectives are in the middle of a “countdown to signing day.” NIL fundraiser.
The Nebraska collective has a goal of $500,000 with a donor that will match $250,000. They are currently at $554,000 raised.
The 1870 Society has a donor that will match $50,000. They have no goal and have provided no updates on how much has been raised. At least not publicly.
This may mean absolutely nothing, but I found it interesting. Looking at various teams forums NIL is definitely viewed differently from program to program. Some fanbases seem put off by it and others seem all about it and very willing to contribute.
It seems programs like Nebraska who have rabid fanbases but bad football teams are the most eager to give money to try to return to relevance.
I do wonder how much of a problem that is for a program like Ohio State that has been the most consistently successful program in the sport. I get the sense our fans take it for granted because it’s all we know.
