The team finally got a chance to practice outside before the monsoon hit around noon today. More than anything else, that is the sign of spring finally being here.
Getting to talk to the tight ends and defensive linemen today provided two very different angles for the spring practice for the Buckeyes. In terms of the tight ends, things are set and only an injury are going to change that. Nick Vannett has been thriving as the only top option in the room and has grown as a leader and a player so far this spring. Coach Tim Hinton said having a player like Vannett returning eases the pain of losing a player like Heuerman last year.
His backup is going to be Marcus Baugh, who, despite having some off the field issues in the early parts of his career has become a safe option at backup. His talent is starting to show, and while he won't see a ton of playing time next season with Vannett in charge, he is setting the stage for the future.
On the other side of the ball, the defensive line has two guys returning that are entrenched in their positions, Bosa at end and Washington at the three-technique, but the other two spots are still very much up in the air, with any number of guys competing for those spots. One of those competitors is Tommy Schutt, who said the D-Line room has been using some of Urban Meyer's comments about the backups needing to step up as motivation in the spring to do just that. Larry Johnson also added that Tyquan Lewis has stood out from the rest opposite Bosa so far this spring.
