- An interesting offer went out today in Ohio but it didn't come from the Buckeyes. Michigan offered class of 2017 Steubenville TE/ATH Charles Reeves. Reeves wasn't on my radar before today but I spent a good part of the morning getting some information on him.
Basically he's a 6-foot-5, 230-pound basketball player turned flex tight end. He wasn't playing much for Big Red early in the season but due to an injury during the Massillon game near the midway point of the season, he was inserted into the lineup and played some wide receiver and tight end the rest of the season.
Speaking with someone close to the program, Reeves was a kid that started to get better each week with more experience and he's an extremely impressive run-and-jump athlete that should open some eyes this summer on the college camp circuit if he can get out to some places.
Hearing Ohio State is snooping around here as well so this will be something to keep an eye on. Matt Dotson from Moeller has been my odds on favorite for top tight end in Ohio for the class but sounds like he might have some competition.
- 'Bump Gate' was fun today. I am referring to a college coach tweeting out this afternoon that the NCAA basically had undercover enforcement officials posing as parents at IMG Academy yesterday and that five schools were getting 'busted' as they put it for violating the bump rule. The tweet has since been deleted and an NCAA Twitter account even came out and denied this. Talking to some people at IMG today, there were only two college coaches even at the school yesterday and the NCAA isn't the DEA, they don't have undercover people doing stuff like this, they are typically very upfront with who they are and why they are there. Clearly someone got confused here or perhaps even the coach was trying to stirr something up.
Speaking of IMG, I am told Ohio State will swing by (guessing Tony Alford but we'll see) early next week to check on their commits as well as several other recruiting targets.
- Ohio State (believe it will be Ed Warinner) is going to be in South Jersey on Friday hitting schools. Palmyra high three-star wide receiver Kelvin Harmon is expecting a visit and he is not far from Camden so I'd expect a visit there to see four-stars DE Ron Johnson and WR/ATH Brad Hawkins.
- Rivals250 defensive back Damar Hamlin was the beneficiary of some new work by the graphics design team over at OSU, they sent him this today...
Hamlin may very well be at the top of the defensive backs board with Levonta Taylor now committed to Florida State. Damar told me today that the Ohio State coaching staff is telling him that he can play either safety or corner, whichever he wants.
- Luke Fickell will be making the rounds locally on Friday, one of his stops will be Columbus DeSales home of 2016 CB Austin Andrews and 2017 DT Derrius Mullins. The Michigan State offer for Andrews was a big one and I think it could be a battle for OSU to get him to camp in June before committing to the Spartans. That is definitely a development worth watching over the next several weeks.
The staff wants to get as many of these guys to camp in June (and preferably on the same day) as possible but Michigan State is in a strong position right now and it will be interesting to see if Andrews holds off and camps. Andrews was looking at visiting Michigan State this weekend but those plans appear to be off for now as Mark Dantonio will not be in town this weekend.
