occurred one of the MOST unselfish acts of American heroism in our nation's history.
Henry "Red" Irwin, won our nation's most militaristic honor, the Medal of Honor, on a "routine" mission over the Empire of Japan.
This man was a member of my father's WWII unit, the 21st BG of the 20th AAF, from the Marianas island group in 1945.
My dad told me often of this man's heroism in the performance of his normal duties because he was in the same operational group as my dad served on Guam, in 1945, in the closing months of WWII. This man's heroism has made me cower in comparison to what he did, on this date in 1945. And, he did it, because he believed in what our nation stood for.
Anyway, I will simply link to the story of this man, and what he did to earn our eternal respect, not to mention the respect of his crewmen on that fateful day. Unbelievably, he lived to fulfill an unbelievable life and continued to give to his country.
