COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the start of the Big Ten baseball season just a day away, the conference has released the preseason poll as well as the preseason honor list. Ohio State was selected to finish third in the conference among voting by the league’s 14 head coaches.
The strength of the Buckeyes team this year will likely be its pitching and it’s no surprise that the team’s three players selected for the preseason honor list are junior pitchers TJ Brock, Garrett Burhenn and Seth Lonsway. The Buckeye starting rotation of Burhenn, Lonsway and Griffan Smith are intact for a third consecutive season and Brock seems to be the leading candidate to anchor the backend of the bullpen.
Burhenn has started 19 games over his first two seasons and has a 4.73 ERA in 112.1 innings. He was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2019 and was listed on Impact Freshman list by D1Baseball.com. Brock has made 21 appearances out of the bullpen in the last two seasons. He has 34 strikeouts over 39.1 career innings and last season, batters hit just .194 against him in his five appearances. Lonsway was named the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List. He has made 21 starts and has logged 110.1 innings over his first two seasons as a Buckeye. He is 9-6 with a 3.59 ERA and has struck 168 batters.
The Buckeyes will open the season on Friday afternoon against Illinois. The four-game series will be played in Greenville, S.C.
