Several Buckeye commits and targets react to the program’s 3-0 start
By Andy Anders and Joseph Hastings
Ohio State has started the season in dominating fashion and has clearly separated themselves from the rest of the Big Ten. Their average margin of victory is just over 23 points per game, and Justin Fields is well in the hunt for the Heisman Trophy.
With this hot start, Andy and I decided to reach out to a multitude of Buckeye pledges and targets. Only a few out of that bunch replied, but this is what they had to say when asked about the team’s 3-0 start to the season.
Borderline five-star Keithian Alexander: “You know, Coach Day is doing all the right things over there. He’s running a tight ship and gets the best out of all his players. And those guys are playing some hell of some football.”
Ohio State commit Gabe Powers: “Yeah, we are looking very good right now. There hasn’t been a game where we ever were close to losing. We have been playing better each game and looking like the best team in the nation.”
Rivals100 DB target Kamari Ramsey: “Ohio State is a great team. Everyone already knew this, and they are dominating like we thought they would. They look explosive on both sides of the ball. They are going to be tough to beat.”
LSU safety commit Bryan Allen: “It’s great. I've definitely been watching them ball.”
Rivals100 linebacker Jalon Walker: “I feel like they are rolling. I know and saw how hard they worked during the time when they weren’t playing and I can see how it’s paying off.”
Rivals250 prospect Jadarian Price: “They’re a great football team. Such a unique culture.”
Top-20 cornerback Toriano Pride: “They’re doing great as a unit and as a team. You can tell that they have been working all offseason for this, and it shows on the field. If they can keep it up, I can most definitely see them in a national championship.”
Recent DE offer Omari Arbor: “I think so far, Ohio State is a great team this year. I think they’ll make it to the final four again this year.”
2022 tight end pledge Bennett Christian: “The Buckeyes have been dominant. It’s been so much fun watching them play. They are firing on all cylinders. As a committed prospect, it’s really exciting seeing your future team play so well.”
Can confirm that Ohio State offered the No. 1 junior in the country
By Joseph Hastings
Several days ago, it was reported by another outlet that Walter Nolen, Rivals’ top-ranked player in the Class of 2022, had received an offer from Ohio State. This was somewhat interesting as Nolen did not post on Twitter or any other social media platform that the program had given the green light to him.
Nolen’s phone has been turned off recently, but I am able to confirm that the Buckeyes are the latest program to offer the highly sought-after recruit. His head coach, Marlon Walls, told me today that Ohio State did offer Nolen, though he did not specify which staff member gave him the good news.
While things were recently made official with Nolen, the Buckeyes have certainly been a school that is high on his radar. The product out of Cordova, Tennessee, told Rivals’ Chad Simmons in July that Ohio State, along with LSU, was one of two colleges sticking out to him the most.
Nolen, who had said to Simmons that he is looking to decide in late 2020 or early 2021, is high on Ryan Day’s program.
“Ohio State is a great school, they always have a great team and I have been talk to Tunmise Adeleye a lot about them, too,” Nolen said. “I just want to get up there and visit now to check it out.”
Walls also added that Nolen’s interest in Ohio State is attributed to their rich tradition of developing defensive linemen. Nolen obviously won’t be able to get up to Columbus until January 2021 at the earliest, but there is definitely strong mutual interest early on here.
Buckeyes crack the top six for a pair of top-100 prospects
By Joseph Hastings
This week, Ohio State landed in the top six for two of the top players along the East Coast in the 2022 cycle.
On Wednesday, Rivals100 member Gunner Givens released a list of schools that featured the Buckeyes. Along with Ohio State making the cut, Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina, Penn State and Virginia Tech are in his final group.
Then, the next day, North Carolina-based linebacker Jalon Walker decided to narrow his recruitment down to a half-dozen programs as well. The eighth-ranked outside linebacker in next year’s class also had Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina and Ohio State in his group, along with Auburn and Georgia.
Starting with Givens, he eliminated over three dozen schools from consideration in his recruitment. Givens has played defensive end and tight end as well in high school, but is slated to play along the offensive line at the next level.
Here is what he had to say to Rivals’ Adam Friedman when discussing why the Buckeyes made the cut.
“They play for national championships and it’s a good school,” Givens said. “They have a bunch of really good 2022 players coming in and they’ve done a good job with the previous classes, so they should be playing for another national championship soon.”
Givens also complimented Greg Studrawa for being an honest coach and someone who could develop him for the NFL.
Switching over to Walker, he’s a little bit of an interesting recruit considering Ohio State’s numbers at linebacker. Al Washington and company currently have three commits at the position group so far: CJ Hicks, Dasan McCullough and Gabe Powers.
Even so, the Buckeyes are going to take another linebacker in the 2022 cycle, with five-star Shawn Murphy sitting atop their wish list. Walker is another recruit that is high on their radar, and the interest isn’t just one-sided.
Walker told me after Ohio State made his top ten that he’s manufactured great relationships with Coach Day and Coach Washington. He appreciates the way Day cares for his players, and is interested in their dentistry school as well.
Walker is also not intimidated by the number of linebackers already in the Buckeyes’ 2022 class, and would welcome the opportunity to compete with them at the next level if he chooses Columbus as his home for the next few years.
Murphy committing to Ohio State would seemingly lead to the end of their pursuit of Walker, but he is a player certainly worth monitoring.
Ohio State offers a four-star defensive end
By Andy Anders
Four-star defensive end Omari Abor, the No. 202 player in the Class of 2022 and No. 28 junior in the state of Texas, landed an Ohio State offer last week.
While an offer to a prospect outside the top 200 nationally could seem odd considering Ohio State is building relationships with some of the nation’s best along the defensive line – as it typically does under position coach Larry Johnson – Abor’s stock is rising in the class and he should be due for a ratings bump soon.
Part of the reason why is the school he plays for. Duncanville is one of the nation’s best high school football teams right now, and Abor is standing out against top tier competition on a very talented team.
His offer list reflects a high opinion from the nation’s top programs: Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia and Michigan are just a handful of the names on his sheet.
From Abor’s perspective, his father told me the Ohio State offer was one his son “really wanted” and the pass rushing standout was amped to land it.
I should be talking to Abor later this week about his thoughts on the Buckeyes, and an article will follow, so keep an eye out for that.
Buckeyes back off Joshua White, Options at Defensive End
Possibly coinciding with the offer to Abor, Ohio State’s pursuit of four-star Georgia defensive end Joshua White appears to be over.
It seems as though interest on both sides has fizzled out, as talks between them have stopped for the most part at this time, White told me.
White’s recruitment is still open for the most part, although it appears he’s destined for a southern school given his interests and offer sheet.
What this means is that the Buckeyes are looking elsewhere at defensive end, possibly focusing their efforts on players they believe are higher caliber. Rivals100 DE Caden Curry, although he could play the inside at the next level, is the first name that comes to mind. I’ll have a clearer picture where things stand with Abor when I talk to him this week.
Top 100 prospect Derrick Moore is another that the Buckeyes have been in talks with, and he told Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Friedman the following in August:
"I know a lot about Ohio State. They have one hell of a defensive line program. Coach Johnson is a good guy. He's a cool guy. We talked about the school, the defensive line program, and how they work. I haven't been there but I'm hoping to visit.”
Kenyatta Jackson, the nation’s No. 86 prospect, is another defensive end the Buckeyes have been in frequent contact with. We’re working to get an update on four-star Ernest Cooper as well.
Simply put, Ohio State has a lot of options at defensive end in the 2022 cycle and the move away from White isn’t cause for concern.
