Kilauea has been erupting since 1983 but a couple hours ago, a new breakout on the east side of the volcano is threatening Puna. Although relatively remote, the area is still home to about 10,000 people and about 2,000 of them in direct line of the flowing lava have been ordered to evacuate.

These events are so unpredictable. It could end in 10 minutes or flow for the next decade or more, wiping out everything in its path. More breakouts could happen at any time. In 2014, a similar breakout almost wiped out Pahoa but stopped flowing just yards from cutting the town in half. Hope this one stops soon too.

Lava goes wherever the hell it -- and gravity -- wants it to. There is no stopping it.

Really feel for the people whose homes are in its path. I am sure evacuating was not in their plans as they started their day. Then again, man plans and mother nature laughs. She is in charge.
