ESPN and the rest of the sports media onboard with the BCS and/or current CFP model have been telling us for years the FBS champ should be determined by us sports media experts via the AP poll. Then it was the AP and Coaches polls. Then it was a combination of polls and some weird SOS formula thrown into a computer to matchup the 2 best teams. Now it's determined by a subjective committee of AD's and former coaches based on unpredictable and unverifiable criteria to determine the 4 very best teams to be in a playoff. It's all BULLSH*T! The media strangle hold over determining the FBS champ has gone on for far too long. Sure it's "evolved" into the current model, but it's still the sports media controlling who plays for the national title, just in a different form. Stop the madness already.

No one can consistently predict how a football game will play out. Not vegas. Not former coaches. Not former players. Not some fancy computer and certainly not the blowhards at ESPN. The current model has produced 10 one-sided blowouts out of 15 total playoff games in 5 years. 66% of these games have been boat races. Before someone chimes in saying we should go back to the BCS model, let me remind you that 9 out of the 16 BCS era championship games were one-sided games as well. That's over 50% folks.

How the FBS has determined it's champion is flawed and always has been because we don't have a true playoff model in place that fairly provides conference champions the opportunity to play for a national title. Yea, I know, no one wants to see a 4-loss NW team in the playoff but look at the NFL wild card round last weekend where 3 of the 4 road teams won their games. The NFL playoffs is composed of division winners and 2 wild card teams. NBA's top 8 teams in both conferences are in with matchups determined by seedings. MLB's division winners in plus a 1-game wild card playoff; used to be just a 4-team playoff that eventually expanded to 8-teams and I'd say it's been successful. UEFA has a world cup style tournament to determine their champion. None of them are determined by polls or some committee made up of completely subjective bafoons or the sports media.

Let's stop pretending that the current CFP model, or it' predecessor in the BCS, actually determines the 2 or 4 best teams to play for a national title. The data doesn't support this claim and that's due in large part because NO ONE can accurately or consistently predict the outcomes. Whether it's matchups, in-game adjustments, bonehead coaching decisions, phantom pass interference penalties or the ball just bounces funny, there are too many variables at play for any of these models to produce competitive football games every time. So let's stop pretending these stupid models can determine the 4 or 6 or 8 best teams deserving to compete in a playoff. It's not about body of work, strength of schedule or the eye test. It's about navigating through your conference and winning it. It's time to adopt a model that rewards conference champs, two wild cards and maybe the best mid-conference champion in a 8-team playoff to determine our champion. Will there be some one-sided blowouts in this model? Yep. There will also be very competitive games as well and the best thing about it is every conference champ gets their chance to win the natty. Win win for everyone and it's fair.
