Grove Brothers and Sister (Susan),
As most of you know... Marc and Kevin have been executing the Southern Swing recruiting road-trip for many years. The Southern Swing started as kind of a “week long / spring break / road trip drive” for Marc and Kevin.... a trip that was filled with “surprise / bonus live features” which were interviews with most of our top recruiting prospects that were in driving distance - off I-75... From Southern Ohio, to Kentucky, to Tennessee, to Georgia, through Florida.... and then they made their way back to Ohio...
Kevin and Marc’s Southern Swing is an exhausting event. They are literally putting in 15-19 hour days... they are up at the crack of dawn.. usually driving hundreds of miles - A DAY - to catch a kid (maybe his parents) and then often the coaches at the prospect’s High School... whenever they can get squeezed in...and Marc and Kevin’s SS content...includes interviews with all of the top Buckeye prospects, as well as, often... additional content from their discussions with their coaches (and inside information is gained from discussions with the kids, their parents, their coaches and their teammates... that you would only be able to obtain in a “face to face / official interview setting”).
The Southern Swing content is 100% completely unique to The Grove. Only....And is perhaps the one feature - for those of you who may be newer to the board here.. that truly differentiates Marc, Kevin and The Grove - from “the others” in their industry.
What started as a week of some contained travel and several extra recruiting updates (from I -75 South from Columbus to Florida and back...) has morphed into Marc and Kevin driving and flying thousands of miles... and throwing in covering Pennsylvania, New York City, New Jersey, Virginia, Baltimore, D.C. Maryland in addition to the traditional Southern Swing States of Kentucky Tennessee, Georgia and Florida... and the last few years... they have been here to Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas. ALL in about a grueling 2 week period...
It was on a surprise trip to Texas just a few years ago that I finally met Marc and Kevin (when Marc and Kevin wanted to run through Mississippi to interview Cam Akers.... and then they decided to come all the way to Texas - to check in on some prospects named Jeffrey Okudah, J.K. Dobbins and Baron Browning). Even though I had been a member here since 2003 and aimlessly, unknowingly really... as I was paying the exact same rate.... I realized that they were personally funding a lot of the expenses of the Southern Swing trip and a lot of other business related travel themselves. If any of you travel for business, can you imagine having to pay your own way to share a room with a coworker for 2 weeks straight? (And stay in the same cheapest hotel rooms.. eating only fast food. And then driving thousands of miles in the cheapest (and smallest) rental cars they could find... together)....finally when realizing all of this...I strongly suggested that they allow me to lead a “Southern Swing / General Grove Travel” fundraising campaign.
I promised this wouldn’t be 7 paragraphs.. so I will to get to the point...
1) Kevin refuses to raise subscription dues. He has always wanted to keep the cost of being a member here at The Grove as low as possible. Our fees here are way too low. And they don’t come close to covering the rising costs of covering a program like Ohio State, that truly recruits it’s players nationwide.
2) Subscription fees alone don’t come anyhwere close to covering the majority of the costs Marc and Kevin incur while traveling for the Southern Swing. Or for Marc to attend out of state high school football games or camps (or for Kevin to attend the NFL Combine recently, for instance). And all of us get to enjoy this greatly expanded content, for the same price every year with the exact same annual subscription fee.
3) Against Kevin’s will.. I basically demanded that he allow me to help sponsor the Southern Swing... and I was confident that there would be MANY OTHER MEMBERS here, that felt like I did about their body of work, effort and the extraordinary recruiting content that we all get here at the Grove... that would also want to participate and help us fund the rising costs of the excellent national coverage we get here.
4) NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL! Many have jumped in and given $10 or $20 to demonstrate their thanks to Marc and Kevin... and to show their camaraderie to the board.
5) $25,000 is about the total cost of Grove travel, hotels, meals, car rentals, flights etc, So that’s the amount that I would love to be able to help generate here.
6) We get such incredible content here.. So ideally.... 1,000 members would simply each kick in an extra $25.00 annually....and then the Grove would have the additional $25,000 that it really needs to fund the Southern Swing and all it’s other travel expenses.
7) Kevin if you could please just help me attach the GoFundme site, to this kickoff... that would be a big help.
8) I am going to kick in a couple thousand bucks. I will donate 10% of the $25,000 goal. And if Kevin and Marc, come to Houston...they already know that I will take care of their hotel rooms and buy them a nice dinner (I will do some tomorrow - to help kick it off and then some towards the end. And the only reason I mention the amount.. is because I wouldn’t want any of you guys (that don’t know me well) to think I am just advertising the need here without also making a contribution.
9) The goal here is widespread participation, Grove camaraderie and to both support and thank Marc and Kevin for their tireless efforts!
10) I apologize for the long winded note. That’s the shortened version. Thank you all in advance for doing what you can to support Marc, Kevin and this great board!
