Day grew up in New England in the 80s/90s.
I grew up in Minnesota in the 90s, fell in love with Eddie and the '95 squad, and have been a diehard ever since (no other connection to OSU or Ohio).
Anyone here who's old enough to remember those days remembers the old ABC coverage maps. College football was just much more regional in those days – and who are the major programs in the Northeast? Penn State, sort of? Joined the B1G in 1990. The Northeast is Big Ten country as much as anything else (which is why Maryland/Rutgers would make sense for the conference if they didn't suck so hard).
The point is, Day's not from the South or Texas or the West Coast; if Day watched major college football growing up, he was watching OSU, PSU, and UM. He may not have been born in Central or NE Ohio – but I wouldn't be surprised if Ohio State (and its rivalries) meant something to him growing up.
Maybe a stretch, but just a thought for those who think you can only get it if you're related to Woody.
