Spoke to the Third Wiseman bright and early this morning and he had some interesting takes on the OSU QB situation...
"I think its pretty obvious to Coach(Meyer) at this point that the biggest change from last year to this was in the departure of Tom Herman and the subsequent, and sometimes unintended, consequences of his move.
We all know Herman was a savant back there--it also appears that he can coach a little, as evidenced by Houston upsetting Louisville yesterday. But as we had discussed pre season, the splitting of the "QB Coach" duties and the "Offensive Coordinator" job has created some challenges for the OSU offense in general, and the QB position in particular.
Ed is doing a good job getting the plays called in on time and generally following a script of down and distance that Meyer wants.
What isn't happening, however, is a smooth integration of the coaching direction that the QB's are getting relative to the overall OSU offense.
You have to remember that the OSU offense and QB position used to function as one(under Herman)---now the meeting are separate, and a lot of times the direction they are getting from Beck and Warinner is slightly different--and I think that is leading to some indecision on that part of our QB's---Cardale in particular.
Cardale is, at his core, an instinctive QB. That is why he could come in last year at the end of the season on short notice and play carefree and without worry. He is just a "see receiver, throw to receiver" kind of kid.
Now he is getting a lot of direction on the nuance of the OSU offense---from two different sources(Beck and Ed) and its clear to everyone watching closely that he is "over thinking" things back there, and is not as effective as he could be. He is missing some pre snap reads, and he is dropping simple snaps back to him as he is thinking about his next move, instead of just catching the ball and doing his thing....
I was worried about how Ed would do calling plays from the sidelines while coaching the Oline--this is still a concern---but a bigger concern is getting the QB position functioning smoothly and efficiently..
the good news is that Coach had identified this issue already and is making some moves to smooth things out---including having Ed and Tim do ALL meetings with the QB's jointly, as well as integrating Ed earlier into the passing game concepts plan for the upcoming weeks....
will still bear watching into the future----these guys are top notch and will get it figured out....."
