Dumbest stat ever?

This is probably the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Of course they win the most games....they play less in conference games than the other conferences.

While the other conferences are playing conference games where there is no chance to go better than .500 the SEC is scheduling and extra FCS school where they go win 99.9% of them. Also for many years they had more teams in their conference than others.

Football GAME THOUGHTS: Ohio State 37, Maryland 17

That was pretty dang ugly for the majority of the game. Plenty of coaching malpractice as well (on both sides). It's inexcusable to play like that coming off the off week.....at home.....against Maryland.

  • Overall I thought it was a poorly coached game. One of Day's worst as a play-caller. Marv starts to cook? Better draw up a redzone screen to Xavier Johnson on the short side of the field.
  • Ohio State has a serious problem with run blocking. Josh Fryar was getting abused early on in the game and I recall one play where he blocked exactly one person, and that person was Matt Jones. Fortunately I didn't notice him as much in the second half.
  • McCord missed too many throws today. There were 2-3 balls that should have been easy touchdowns had he not underthrown them.
  • The stretch to the boundary needs to be stuffed into a cannon and shot into the sun. Weird how McCord went under center and the toss play to the wide side resulted in a touchdown.
  • Marv is Marv. Really hope Emeka's injury isn't serious.
  • Really liked the play design on that TD pass to Stover.

  • Lathan Ransom and Sonny Styles were both awesome.
  • Denzel Burke was really good again (despite the one penalty).
  • I thought JT had a good game as well. Nice to see him get a sack and there were plenty of other big plays.
  • Maryland's linebackers outplayed Ohio State's today. Tommy missing an easy tackle on Taulia was a really bad look. Same goes for Steele on the one TD rush (which led to him being benched).
  • Noticed multiple plays where two Ohio State defenders seemed to be covering the same zone. Not ideal.
  • I still want more Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson.
  • As @85Yards pointed out below, Josh Proctor has been great. For me he's the biggest pleasant surprise of the season.
  • Overall it was a weird game for the defense. They played fairly well and kept Ohio State in the game early, but that makes two games in a row with poor linebacker play.
  • Parker Fleming can be placed in the same cannon as the boundary stretch plays.

Linebackers

Although the defense has significantly improved over all, Am I the only one that is somewhat disappointed with the play of our linebackers? I thought Laurenitis would be an upgrade but to me, I think Tommy and Steele have regressed particularly the last two games. I also don’t understand why we never see Hicks out there particularly in
Passing situations where he could either guard a TE or rush the quarterback.
Of course, I would also like to see Melton, Kanu, Etc. Rest Ekbuka this week before PSU and play X, Tate, Ballard, Innis.

Basketball Big Ten Preseason Media Poll

Conducted by The Athletic and The Columbus Dispatch.

On my ballot, I had Ohio State No. 4 (I'm ready to be hurt again) and I had Bruce Thornton on the second-team all-league. Considered Scotty Middleton for FOTY, but went with the Maryland kid instead. I was also the lone non-Zach Edey vote for POY, but that might have been because I'm tired of watching him play basketball.

Offensive line recruiting and coaching...

Just watched Bill and Birms podcast... first off as I watched the game it is crystal clear that the play of the line has gotten worse. The inability of the OL to run block is going to cost this team big time. It looks like they are so bad at it that they can't even functionally block the correct defenders. I can not recall a time when we had this bad of an offensive line. The worst part is Day isn't going to fire Frye. We were told what a great OL coach he is well, I'm here to say that was a lie. While the room isn't full of 5* OL it is full of 4* caliber OL. Look I get that its a young line full of first-year players but to be functionally incapable of executing ANY part of the run scheme is 1000% on Frye not doing his job as a coach. Philbin so far has added NOTHING.

What was going on between Day and the Sideline Official?

Austin or Bill...Joel Klatt and Gus Johnson thought the sideline official was retaliating against Coach Day when he flagged Xavier Johnson for moving forward on the first TD pass to Marv Harrison. The replay of the play showed virtually nothing Xavier did was worth a penalty. Fortunately, the Bucks came right back with another TD pass to Marvelous Marv.
We've seen Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming going in motion many times and turn up field slightly early and not be called.

TreVeyon Henderson OUT vs. Maryland

Ohio State won't have the third-year back available for today. We don't have much more on the nature of his injury, but he's been seen in some social media posts the last two days (including running around at the hotel this morning). Austin reports that whatever is keeping Henderson out was picked up during the Notre Dame game, not during the off week.

The full availability report for today's game:

Jyaire Brown, DB
Kyion Grayes, WR
TreVeyon Henderson, RB
