PAC 12 vs Mountain West....

I'm trying to understand why the PAC 12 and Mountain West Conferences haven't decided to put aside their differences and merge into a super conference. I thought that was the latest rage in college football? Honestly, if they go at it with two conferences, this situation looks like mutually assured destruction.

Or am I being overly pragmatic about this issue?
