Post Season Thoughts

My thoughts:

1) It never seemed like the offense neve really clicked until Georgia

2) Defense was improved but it still needs improvement

3) Similar to 2019, I feel like this season is gonna be a “what if” conversation for all Bucks fans

4) This might sound crazy but I think if Ryan Day loses to Michigan next year he will be on the Hot Seat

Anyways, happy new years to all and thanks Austin, Birm, and Bill for the coverage all season

Brief Anecdote about public perception of the Buckeyes

Good Morning everyone. I know we're all recovering from the game on Saturday night, but I just had an interaction with a few co-workers that I felt like was noteworthy.

For context, I work in Northern Kentucky and the majority of my co-workers are Cincinnati fans or Kentucky fans. Generally, I would say that Cincinnati fans respect Ohio State's status as a program (although they puffed their chest a lot during their 2021 season), but the Kentucky fans are the traditional SEC fans who believe that OSU is consistently overrated.

Now for the actual story. Leading up to the playoff, all of the Kentucky (SEC) fans told me that OSU was overmatched and that this was going to be a blowout. This generally mirrors what @AustinWard was discussing in the leadup to this game from national media/public perception. Coming into work this morning, I had multiple co-workers come up to me and say that the Buckeyes were the better team and that they were wrong about OSU as a program.

I only share this because while this is a results oriented business and we're not in the "moral victory" world, this performance made an impact on people's opinion. Our team showed the nation what it's truly capable of and that we're still one of the elite.

On the Lathan Ransom "slip"

I'm hearing a lot of analysis of the game that refers to the unfortunate nature of Ransom falling down on Georgia's late 75yd TD pass.

The way I see it, as has been the case all year, OSU lacks the athleticism and playmaking ability at safety to cover man to man against good competition. It's not like Ransom was in phase and just happened to trip. He was in the process of getting blown by and trying to get his hips around. It was a lack of cover technique and athleticism that led to him falling.

Again I do not like the fact that Knowles D asks so much of a talent limited group of safeties. You either have to dial that part back until you bring in the right talent or you have different guys out there. This is another reason why the loss of Caleb Downs is so disappointing..

Could Franklin/Penn State be the next Harbaugh/Michigan?

It took Jim Harbaugh six years to solve the Ohio State problem. Could Penn State's James Franklin finally figure it out using recruiting and the transfer portal? Could Franklin beat the Buckeyes and then run off 2 or 3 wins?
With Lincoln Riley and USC joining the Big Ten in another year or two, it will be critical for the Buckeyes to raise their game and not keep the status quo. The college football world is changing.

Not mentioned before, Harrison was going to catch that pass!

On the scramble play in which Marvin Harrison was knocked out, had the Georgia player not blasted him in the head, knocking him out, Harrison had the pass in his grasp with both feet in the end zone: TOUCHDOWN!!!
Stroud was under intense pressure and was about to be sacked for a BIG loss. It appeared he was throwing the ball away through the back of the end zone, but Harrison was there.
That was one of many game-changers as the ball fell to the turf and Harrison was sidelined with a concussion. As Kirby Smart admitted after the game "Ohio State probably should have won." There were 4-5 breaks that just didn't go the way of the Buckeyes.

Injuries. Snakebit or training regimen?

I know we are prob just unlucky…. But man it seemed like we just fell apart after the bye week this year.

It’s been a while where I have seen a team this banged up in so many positions.

Could we do things better to prevent?

Could we do things better to allow the guys to heal and return without lingering issues?

I feel the youngsters could have played ALOT more against weaker teams to allow the injured guys to heal…. I think miyan was a prime example of running him thru exhaustion…. Maybe even Henderson suits up against scum/uga if we give him extended time off.

Defensive Questions for 2023

Obviously as evidenced by last year and games against higher level opponents this year, the defense had not improved much. To fix a problem, we need to understand the problem.
1- is it scheme or talent? Hafley had a great defense when he was here but was that due to Chase Young and 4 NFL players in the defensive background or scheme?

2. Has the game changed so much that holding a good offensive team to under 40 points is a victory?

3. OSU plays in a conference that appears to be mostly a running conference (Michigan, Illinois, Wisky, Minnesota) rather than a passing conference. Should we recruit big players to stop the run (like Georgia) or have a combination of player body types. The large Georgia players were gassed by our hurry up offense?

4. Nick Bosa has said that we should be working on flexibility rather than strength. We need the strength for teams like Michigan but is lack of flexibility hurting our pass rush?

5. Eichenberg played great this year but rarely left the field in blowouts. Is that hurting the development of our younger players. It might also convince these players to hit the portal?

Artificial Intelligence

Was discussing with my daughter how easy homework can be with AI. (she is a teacher). I used an AI chat bot as an experiment with the prompt of “Describe Ryan Day’s offensive scheme” and got this response. Not bad!

It is difficult to describe Ryan Day's offensive scheme without more context, as the specific tactics and strategies he employs may vary depending on the personnel and strengths of his team, as well as the specific opponent they are facing. In general, however, it seems that Day places an emphasis on a balanced offensive attack, with a mix of running and passing plays designed to keep defenses guessing and create opportunities for explosive plays. He also emphasizes discipline and execution, and has implemented a fast-paced, uptempo style of play to try to wear down opponents and keep them on their heels.

I have a complaint about this site

Whenever I click onto this site and check out this message board, there are never any good threads that go deep into discussion about Buckeye football.

There is normal threads you would expect like NIL and future cast etc but the depth of chats on this site is very poor. We are playing Georgia which any OSU fan would have signed up for and given we have the largest fan base I would have expected several chats about stuff like how we can exploit this or how can we do new plays or anything football game related and there is nothing.

I know having been on this site for 20 years as soon as I hit enter I will get the usual 20 wiseass replies from people and I won’t bother reading them beam cause this message is for the management that runs this site and auto bills me every year. It’s just not an engaging message board and just be brutally honest as a consumer.

If the patrons are not going to start meaningful dialogue, why don’t the writers who get paid by the site start conversations that engage the fan base.

Before u criticize me scroll down the next few pages and show me some meaningful chatter with members discussing the game or players or gameplaning. It just doesn’t exist. Look if I owned the site, I would rather have good constructive criticism then people silently leaving the site and wondering why

JJ McCarthy had a rough night…

First his Dad copped a feel with his girlfriend on national television

Then he posed for his annual “look at me” photo

Then he stormed off from the press conference after running his mouth all week.

I Think Day made the right choice…
