Bill Landis appreciation thread

I assume like many of you (I know, I know I shouldn’t assume 😁) I came here because of Birm, Austin, and Andrew. But, although I’d heard of Bill I must admit I never really followed his work. After a few months now on this this site, I realize that was a mistake. Bill has become one of the opinions I enjoy reading/watching the most. No knock on the rest, just an acknowledgment of Bills contributions.

JSN

This guy does not have him going in the 1st round. If that’s true, from a financial perspective he should come back. The difference in rookie contract between a high 1st round pick and a 2 round is massive. Heck the difference between top 5 and last 5 of the 1st round is about $20 mil over the 4 years.

He could bet on himself while he earns a million in NIL next year.

Should OSU change their recruiting strategy?

So I’ve been thinking on this for a bit and listening to the Podcast Daily today (1/5/2023 - great episode!) spurred me to post this.

Should OSU still aggressively recruit at a national level, or should they take a different approach?

In the past, with restrictive transfer rules, the current recruiting strategy made a lot of sense. Get the best players available and sort it out, because they likely are to going anywhere. But now I wonder whether there needs to be more thought to roster building.

The guys brought up Carnell Tate as a very hypothetical example, but I thought it was instructive. if you are building a roster with all four and five star recruits, then some of those high end guys who aren’t getting opportunities early are going to leave for places where they WILL get opportunities. Why wait until you’re a junior if you can play as a sophomore at a program that’s still quite good? And maybe get some NIL as well?

Should OSU adjust by signing more kids with higher floors/lower ceilings so that they can have more roster continuity? More kids from Ohio who are more likely to stick around? You still need four and five stars to be competitive. Is there ever a situation where you can have TOO many?

I am not advocating for anything. Just an interesting thought experiment.

I have so many questions about College football moving forward...

1. Will rivalry games even matter in a few years? If they go to a 12 team play off teams can play 2 times a year and/or play a game that doesn't really matter outside of the conference. I can see games with OSU/TTUN where starters don't play if both teams have a spot in the playoff why risk the injuries?

2. Will conference championships matter? See #1...why play them if they don't settle anything.

3. How long until the players form a college football players association? Pandora's box is open and there is too much money and too much at risk now for the schools, coaches, NCAA, and collectives funding NIL. This is going to get more complicated NOT LESS and the way these kids will stand up to all these institutions, lawyers and rich people will require a Players Association.

4. What is exactly does the NCAA do at this point? They can't control the money flowing to athletes anymore, they didn't enforce the rules earlier....what are they doing? What value do they provide?

5. Transfer Portal, Tampering with players with NIL money...does anyone think this is sustainable? I mean imagine the NFL with no tampering rules...right. It's one thing to deal with NIL in recruiting but with the transfer portal now there are starters, important players that can go in the portal to the highest bidder anytime they choose. And outside forces are coming after them to do so. This is total insanity in my opinion.

Parker Fleming

I’m not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is there any talk of OSU moving on from Parker Fleming? Just not sure what he has done well with special teams recently besides a couple blocked punts against average at best talent. Subpar punting and kicking, no noise in the return game, 2 failed fakes (Kirby’s timeout I know but they had 12 players on the field) in crucial moments.

Geography Of Central Colorado Open Discussion

Hoping we can discuss all the hot topics of Central Colorado geography, logistics, and travel times here, instead of in threads where it is not relevant. Having made the drive on I-25, I will say the view is amazing and the 80mph speed limit is awesome. I just haven't been able to find out how long it takes to get from Colorado Springs to Boulder. Anyone know?
