Interesting world we're living in, eh?
Julian Sayin is in the portal and the conversation around him has been very Buckeye-centric and for good reason: the two sides were very close throughout his process and the Buckeyes would have loved to add him a year ago but Sayin wanted to play at Alabama and it never materialized for Ohio State.
In that time, Air Noland chose the Buckeyes. Devin Brown chose the Buckeyes over and over, Lincoln Kienholz chose the Buckeyes. A month ago, Ohio State coaches had to begin talking to those three quarterbacks about Will Howard and each of them decided to keep picking the Buckeyes.
Adding a player like Sayin, who is very good and in my opinion the best quarterback in the Class of 2024, means another difficult conversation and not just a "hey this is what we need to do in order to get better for 2024" but a "Hey, we actually think you guys aren't going to develop here even though that's what we've recruited you on and built the relationship upon" type-of-conversation.
Chemistry matters and culture matters and while I understand that everyone believes—in many ways rightfully so—that it's better to just stack talent and let it sort itself out, I personally think that's not the direction Ohio State is going to go. If you want to build a great team you have to trust and talent and it's not just the quarterback room watching these decisions it's the entire team. How does Jeremiah Smith respond if the Buckeyes "screw over" another 5-star quarterback in Air Noland that played a major role in his recruitment?
Long story short, I don't think Ohio State is going to make the move with Julian Sayin. I understand folks think they should no matter what but everything being done in Columbus right now is for the 2024 season and if Sayin isn't going to come in and be the starter—he wouldn't be the starter as a true freshman—then jeopardizing the rest of the chemistry and culture of the program isn't worth risking.
Raise the pitchforks if you want, call me a homer if you want, but I think it's the right decision.
