Kings of Columbus Pod

Latest one really worth a listen too. Especially if you’re more on the frustrated and out on or near out on Day side of things……or you’re on the other side and you wanna hear a more “removed” from the fanbase perspective.

Doug and Bill do a really good job at trying to express the voice of the fans and not dictate what the fans should think/feel.

Highlights:

Doug and Bill are both in natty or bust territory; and both are mostly “out” on Ryan Day right now (subject to change).

Quote of the Pod: “They just aren’t achieving anything they set out to do right now.”

Mental preparation for coaching change

Hey!

Just wanted to post this since I think it is helpful to prepare one’s self for collateral damage when a coaching change occurs. I am in the camp of “I defended Day from 2021 to yesterday and no longer defend him and agree he needed to go.” However, I just think it is wise to really mark down player movement possibilities for when a change happens.
These departures should not stop necessary coaching moves. Good can’t be allowed to get in the way of great:

WR:
Jeremiah Smith
Brandon Inniss
Carnell Tate
Mylan Graham

OL:
Carson Hinzman
Ian Moore

QB:
Julian Sayin
Air Noland
Lincoln Kienholtz

DL:
Caden Curry
Kenyatta Jackson
Kayden McDonald
Hero Kanu
Tywone Malone
Joshua Mickens
Eric Mensah
Jason Moore
Eddrick Houston

Secondary:
Caleb Downs
Calvin Simpson Hunt
Jaylen McClain
Leroy Roker
Jayden Bonsu

LB:
Payton Pierce

2025 recruiting class:
Devin Sanchez
Na’eem Offered (yes I’m aware of possible flip)
Faheem Delane
Riley Pettijohn
Quincy Porter
Zion Grady
Nate Roberts
Tarvos Alford
Maxwell Roy
De’zie Jones
Phillip Bell
Isaiah West
Jarquez Carter
Deshawn Stewart
Trajen Odom
Jayvon McFadden
Jordyn Woods

Feel free to correct me or add more that I overlooked. Going to be a very different roster.

2 Things Can Both Be True

1. Day and Chip deserve every ounce of criticism they are getting. They are grown ass adults who willingly cash paychecks that add up to millions of dollars. They have every resource available and choke in the biggest moments. I am actually pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the reaction has been and even a lot of people in the national media who defended Day because of his overall record seem to be shifting to the opposite side now.

2. This is still a damn good football team capable of winning the title. Provided Day and Chip somehow remember how to coach, this team has all of the elements needed to beat any team in the country. Insane talent on offense but an incredibly elite defense can go a long way. I hope the team can block out the noise, refocus and attack the playoff.

While the loss sucks big time, this is actually a decent scenario for them. Time off to heal, work on the O Line, and develop a game plan after some reflection. Go Bucks!

Lou Holtz Broke Ryan Day

Ever since Lou Holtz called out Ryan Day for coaching soft teams I've watched Day go out of his way to prove Ohio State's toughness. Yesterday, proving Ohio State's toughness was running directly at two future 1st Round NFL draft pick DTs over and over again. It was the equivalent of human wave attacks against machine gun nests in WWI trench warfare.

Until Ryan Day gets out of his own head he is going to to continue this self-destructive behavior. I hope he takes a long look in the mirror, or somebody challenges him about it, or Day will lose more games like yesterday.

O-line and Kicker--not second-guessing, first-guessing

Last spring, there were a lot of us saying that the focus on the O-line and the kicking game was not good enough and would come back to bite us. I was shocked that an all-american kicker from in the state would go to another team and not OSU. Day's transition from 'Passing-Game Coach' to Head Coach has been incomplete. I think we showed signs of progress this year with hiring Chip Kelly and Day focusing more on special teams but we failed the final exam. We knew the offense line and kicker were 'C+' going into the year. Should have been addressed in terms of players and coaching last spring. Don't understand how you could bring Frye back after the Cotton Bowl performance. Don't see how you don't get more help for the O-line and a better kicker.

Can't Sleep, Head Hurts

This was the worst loss experience since '96.

Losing to UCLA in the '76 Rose Bowl shocked and baffled as I thought the decisive win over them in the regular season meant we were better -- terrible Rose Bowl where the opponent came out after the half and shut us down. '98 MSU was shocking but understandable in that we made many TOs and couldn't pass pro.

'96 saw us get into the RZ multiple three times -- behind O Pace -- and scored 9 points in the first half, then one big play breakdown on D and the O cratered in the second half.

This game was worse. Michigan team was worse (62 yards passing, zero TDs, 2 picks) -- the game plan was invisible -- outside of apparently believing that they had to run to win -- they didn't seem to pick up the actual thread of the game.

Maybe they felt they could keep banging into the middle of the line because they never fell far behind.

This is what I posted before the game, never really thinking that we were going to actually fall into the hole:

'Michigan has been evolving and had a recent game where they kind of came out, but we have also evolved, and the results have been the D has been disruptive, dangerous. They aren't going to pick us apart.

As long as we don't give up TOs AND a ST disaster, we will win. It won't be a runaway train -- the weather and the opponent won' allow for that -- but they will be facing the same weather, and their opponent is better than ours.

Our run game has not been dominant -- but we can run. Our OL made errors last week, but we overcame. We are going to make mistakes tomorrow. We are going to respond by making plays. We will crack them open eventually.'

I didn't think that we would have both TOs and a ST disaster. Then it happened and we did not snap to.

Sickens me. I haven't been able to think since.

Game Thread THE GAME THREAD: No. 2 Ohio State vs. Michigan — 12PM on FOX

Colston Loveland was a bit of a concern but now he seems unlikely to play. Other than that, there’s just not a whole lot to the UM offense.

The defense is a different story even without Will Johnson, but the linebackers and secondary have seemed pretty meh all season. Graham are Grant are both problems so here’s to hoping the OL is up for the challenge.

I’ve got Ohio State 30, Michigan 13.
