Expectations…

I found today’s Podcast Daily really frustrating. For years Austin and Zach have vastly underestimated our opponents and consistently made outrageous score predictions. And then when Ohio State fails to meet those unrealistic expectations, they often throw the biggest fits.

Zach was losing his mind that we gave up almost 500 yds of offense to Oregon. Meanwhile, Oregon gave up 470 yards of offense to us. Both Alabama AND Georgia gave up OVER 500 yds offense when they played a game everyone was freaking out about because it was so amazing. And when we lost 42-41 to Georgia in 2022, it was a very similar story.

So do all of these coaches and defenses suck? Kirby Smart? Dan Lanning? Kalen DeBoer? Are Oregon fans losing their mind because they gave up 470 yds and 31 points to Ohio State? Or maybe this is just what happens in a lot of big time matchups.

Obviously there are problems that need to be addressed and I completely understand being frustrated. But it was a 1 point loss to the #2 team in the country in an extremely hostile environment. Josh Pate said, without a doubt, that Autzen is the loudest stadium in the B1G. And unlike 99% of people, he’s been to all of the contenders including a Penn State white out. Every rational person knew this was going to be a very challenging game, including Vegas. But when you predict we are going to win by 28 points, that’s on you for having ridiculous expectations.

I think Doug illustrated this and expressed what I’m feeling really well in this part of Kings of Columbus.

I also found this sentiment from multiple neutral observers of the game and think it is accurate.

Former Buckeyes Elsewhere

Watched a good portion of Kyle McCord and Syracuse. He looks more poised this year. Still really accurate when he has time. Still not a good runner or mover in the pocket and can get rattled at times. Happy for Kyle getting a fresh start at a slightly lower level and playing well.
Vamahi did okay at Washington as a starting guard. Was trucked by Mason Graham when they left him one-on-one. Happy that he gets a chance to play. Looks way better now with more experience than last year.
Any other former buckeye sightings? Heard that Royer is doing pretty well for Cincinnatti.

Landis/Kings of the North Oregon Postgame Discussion

Hoping to have some board discussion now that the dust has settled, and I hate YouTube conversation so I’m bringing some stream of consciousness as I finally listen to the podcast after cooling down and processing after putting myself through a thorough rewatch of the game late last night. Nearly ALL of my consternation lies with the defense. However, I will start with offense since that’s where @Bill Landis and Doug started.

1) how anyone could wake up and say the name Will Howard and then start complaining is…..something. Completes 80 percent of his passes for 300+ 2 TD and runs for another, as well as multiple 4th down conversions. Scores TD on first drive and leads us down the field to win with 2 backup offensive lineman in the game.

2) yes the last play with Will. I get it. But this is a Chip/Day issue for me. There’s 6 seconds and 1 timeout left. You know Oregon is going to play soft coverage with a weak middle. SO TAKE THAT! I’m QB power behind Judkins knowing I want 5-6 yards and the entire team trying to call timeout. I don’t get calling a play that allows for any hesitation at all. Remove it from the equation.

3) Doug is getting into it now, but Day has just not been on point with having something special dialed up for the most high leverage moment. It’s first and 10 with under 20 seconds from the 28. We throw to the goalline on first and then the soft 50/50 call on Jeremiah on second. It appeared in the Georgia game that we were just running plays. I don’t mean to sound flippant. You have to run a play, right? But where’s the one that absolutely breaks a tendency that you’ve had in your back pocket? In this game where’s the fake counter where you leak a WR that shows they are part of the 3 man pull like the first 5 games of the season? Run a damn TE delay after drawing coverage on purpose to Emeka and Smith? Have something for that ass that you’ve been saving for a gotta have it moment that they’ve never seen!

4) will continue to listen and post more thoughts for anyone to discuss

With the best roster in Football...

How is it acceptable to still have a subpar Kicker who isn't capable of hitting 50+? I get not wanting to rely on putting yourself in a position to have to make a 50 yard FG to win. But guess what? Against matchup teams, those things can make the difference in a championship team, and not. How OSU, after losing on a FG last year, did not go out and bring in the best kicker in the country to complement the rest of the roster is more malfeasance. Once again it's on the special teams.

End of game offense in big games under Ryan Day

Something that has stuck with me since the loss has been the three recent failed drives to win the game under Day. Against UGA, TTUN, and now Oregon, Ohio State's offense has had the ball with the chance to win the game and has scored precisely zero points on those three tries. To me at least, that is damming. Day is an offensive coach, I guarantee you that he would say that every single time he would take the ball with the opportunity to win these massive games every single time. Defenses are gassed at the end of games and good offense beats good defense in CFB. We all knew that Oregon was going to get a score when they got the ball back with ~6 minutes left, how come something always goes wrong with our offense? How come, with three separate attempts at this with three different QBs have they come up short three times?

And yes, I obviously know that the exception to this is the Notre Dame game in which McCord tried to hand the game away before we scored. But as I have said before and will say again. Notre Dame is a tier 2 program and we all know it. It is not the same as these truly talent-equated games. Notre Dame is the team we beat when we don't get to play for the title.

So who are the great teams?

Is it just Texas? That win over Michigan, especially in week 2, isn’t nearly as impressive as people thought at the time. But they’ve been the most consistent.

Oregon clearly isn’t great. They really struggled against Idaho and Boise State and only beat us by 1 at home.

I can’t imagine anyone here thinks Penn State is actually an elite national title contender.

Alabama lost to Vandy and almost lost to South Carolina yesterday. They are a mess.

Georgia lost to that Alabama team and did not look good against Mississippi State yesterday.

Miami? No
Tennessee? No
Ole Miss? No

Is it Texas and only Texas this year?

Venting about Oregon (not about OSU players or coaches)

In this moment today, I hate them ALMOST as much as I hate scUM.
Everything they do reeks of a "look at me, look at me" little sibling who feels they've been slighted in some capacity.
Everything they do is attention seeking.

They can't just punt normally
They can't kick onside kicks normally
They can't convert 1 or 2 point conversions normally
They spit in our faces
They can't dress normally
And, to make it even worse.
THEY RUSHED THE FIELD EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE RANKED #3 IN THE COUNTRY!

At first they were the cute little duck that is bright and innocent and waddles along - how can you be mad at that duck?
Now they're a full-grown mallard that I want to roast.

They spit in our face literally and figuratively. I want that aggressiveness now!
We will have our vengeance in December. Can't wait!
Lets see what happens on a neutral field when we don't have 5 false start penalties and a BS Off PI penalty with 22 seconds remaining when we're already in field goal range!

Ok, venting session over for now.
