Outgoing Buckeyes (or lack thereof)

Every year, the general consensus about scholarship numbers is that "they'll work themselves out". But this portal cycle closes in a just under a week and OSU continues to be over the scholarship limit with only one spring transfer. Does the staff believe a late wave of portal entries are coming or grad transfers?

We've heard about the uncomfortable conversations that the staff is having with some of the players who are buried on the depth chart and it just seems a bit odd that there haven't been more entries.

Football Elite 11 Regional at Massillon

Was up there today to watch some quarterbacks rifle that pigskin. Ryan Day was there because his son was part of the camp, which meant Day got to watch a bunch of QBs throw. Nice little loophole for the head coach to use.

Kirk Herbstreit was also there. His son Chase, a 2025 QB at St. X, was working out.

The most high-profile guy there was 2024 Notre Dame commit CJ Carr. He's the real deal. Ball flies out of his hand. He earned an invite to the Elite 11 Finals in LA later this summer. Not sure anyone else will be getting an invite from the group there today (only 2024 guys can).

But there were some younger players worth watching for sure. The two big in-state guys in 2025, Findlay's Ryan Montgomery and Bellefontaine's Tavien St. Clair were there. Nathan Bernhard, a 2026 prospect from Ashland, was also there. All three worked out in the same group as R.J. Day. So Ryan Day got a good look at all three.

Montgomery and St. Clair had solid performances. You can definitely see the promise with both. St. Clair in particular stood out to me for just how much he's developed physically since seeing him at an OSU camp in June. He said he was 180 pounds then and he's 207 pounds now. He's stopped playing baseball and is focused solely on football now. It seems to be paying off. But out of that 2025 pair, it's Montgomery who has the offer right now. Last summer there was definitely a gap between the two. Now? I'm not so sure. Will be interesting to see what OSU does with St. Clair moving forward. Both should be back at OSU sometime this summer. Montgomery said his team will be at the OSU 7-on-7 camp in June. I imagine Bellefonintane will be there as well. They were last year.

Bernhard shows a lot of promise as well. He's 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds with a frame that looks like it could hold much more weight. Three-sport athlete (basketball and track). Was inconsistent, which you expect from a player that young, but his good was pretty good. The last drills of the day might have been his best. Penn State has offered him already. I can see the projection for sure, even if he's a ways away from really tapping into his potential. He said he'll also be at OSU this summer.

Couple other guys who stood out to me: Grady Adamson, a 2025 prospect from Oklahoma who holds a Pitt offer; Brennen Ward, a 2025 from Gahanna Lincoln, who has MAC and Kentucky offers; and Walter Moses, a 2025 from Perry, who holds offers from Akron and UConn.

OSU ranked #1 by a sizable margin FPI

FPI LOVES Ohio State and by a WIDE margin. There is a CLEAR drop off after #3 Georgia 27.2 then LSU #4 comes in at 22.1 scUM clocks in 10 FPI points below OSU with a 21.4 OSU scores a 31.5 #2 Alabama registers a 28.2

I think the big surprise for OSU fans is going to be just how DOMINATING the running game will turn out to be. I think Trey Henderson is going to have an absolutely massive year. This will take pressure off the OL pass blocking because a punishing running game allows the OL to pass when it wants to and when the opposing defense is creeping up to stop the run opening hit the WR to blow past the DBs who are out of position because they can't stop the run.

The offense is going to be VERY explosive in 2024. Couple that with a stifling defense and look out... OSU has by far the highest odds of making the CFP and wi

Question for northernbuck

Will these be the same officers tasked with inspecting the genitals of young athletes after anti-trans legislation makes "inspections" a requirement for youth sports?

CJ Hicks

All time bad take from Ward about CJ on the daily this morning. He would be on the field for Alabama and Georgia this season. If we don't think he can execute against a team like Indiana, regardless of the score, tOSU has far bigger issues than how many reps he should be getting.

One can hope the staff doesn't have that same mindset. It will be a generational failure by this staff if CJ isn't getting around 20ish snaps a game. Sick of this team not deploying it's talent. All of this goes for Sonny too, he's the best in that room. I would comfortably live with either of their growing pains because of the upside. Seems to work for those teams winning the trophies Ohio State so desperately wants!

Oline thoughts

I am just going to lay out some thoughts I have in my head regarding this oline. If folks want to converse cool or ignore that’s cool too. I come at this with the approach that pass blocking is MUCH harder than run blocking. This is something I’ve noticed with the Broncos oline as I’m a beleaguer Broncos fan and something I’ve noticed watching the Bears due to my Justin Fields obsession. Run blocking skills normally come first and pass blocking is something that takes more time to develop. We, as a rivals board group, saw this many times last year with Matthew Jones in a different way. He’s an elite olinemen (imo) and he did well pass blocking last year and struggled run blocking bc of his foot injury.

We have 2 great guards and 2 identified starters that need some development and a couple vying for RT that need more than a little development. As a result this group can run block well in general (Tegra on the edge with Chips long run) and pass block pretty well up the middle and on the left. I think by the time we get to September this offensive line will be good enough to reach the goals, but I think the staff needs to look in the portal to A) further the competitive and fighting spirit and B) as some insurance.

I am in no way concerned with how McCord looked. He needs capable oline play and decent weapons and after Marv sat today he had 1 multi year in Ballard with developmental guys and freshman. That’s it, that’s my thoughts lol.

Podcast Daily Technical Issue

@AustinWard @Birm @Bill Landis

You may already be aware of this, but if not there have been some issues with the audio/video synching on some recent videos including this morning. It makes it look like Austin is cutting off or talking over whoever is speaking, but it’s obviously a technical issue. I’ve seen it happen on maybe 2 or 3 videos in the last couple weeks.
