TPD today discussing the projections of OSU missing the playoffs made me realize that a lot of people misunderstand how the format will work the next 2 years. When the vote occurred to expand the playoffs It was before the Pac 12 collapse and the proposal based on every single thing I can find simply stated that the top 6 conference Champions will be guaranteed a playoff spot, and that the top 4 positions must go to a conference champion. unlike with the BCS which had specific conferences that were considered AQs, the new playoff format doesn't care what conferences those 6 spots come, at the end of the year the committee will take a list of the rankings of all the conference champions and the 6 highest ranked will be in, before the Pac collapse this essentially meant it would be the P5 + 1 G5, but now it will be P4+ 2 G5. This does not change just because one of the major conferences no longer exists. The top 6 conference champions are still getting in, regardless of their ranking. Any move to change this format before 2026 would require a unanimous vote by all the conferences, and why would any G5 willingly vote for less guarantied money? so for the next 2 years there will be at least 2 G5 teams in the 12 team playoff, that is the reason both Tulane and Boise were in the projection over Ohio State.
It is still insane to me to project OSU to miss, I fully agree with that discussion and most of the major points brought up for that portion of the discussion, just really wanted to put this out there since I have seen a ton of discussion on X and now today by TPD that miss this point. Maybe I am wrong, and if I am please correct me, but everything I can find about the vote to expand the playoff indicates it is simply 6 conference champions with a spot with no specific conferences named.
