Was texting a UGA buddy of mine last night, some perspective

Was texting a good friend who is a UGA grad and was actually a student assistant on the team before graduating from there (think ankle taper and water bottle guy). He had an interesting (and infuriating) perspective on the CFB landscape and OSU. Wanted to hear others thoughts I tend to agree with a lot of what he said.

-He said he and a lot of UGA fans were jumping with joy after the UM game. The general consensus among them is that if they beat bama they coast to their 3rd straight title as OSU was the only other team they view as a threat. I tend to agree with this honestly. He went on to say OSU scares them because of the pure skill talent and days schematic expertise in last years game. He and most UGA fans have no idea why we cant beat UM and they think they can beat UM by 30 because of the complete lack of explosiveness. All in all a lot of respect for us from the UGA side and they are “happy” they likely don’t have to play us.

-Went on to say Kirby beats Sabans title amount by 2030….that was a hot take

-Said most UGA fans think OSU is their biggest threat going forward for years to come if they can learn how to coach/develop. “UGA has ELITE coaching/player dev and ELITE talent” and “yall (OSU) have ELITE talent and below average to bad coaching outside of maybe 2 assistants, its kinda shocking”

-On Day they echoed similar opinions. UGA fans think he is a great offensive coach and is still learning the ropes of being the Head guy, last year kindof put them on notice I guess. Referenced Kirbys first 5 years were always “cant win the big one…those were trying times” and then he found Todd Monken. He, like us, doesn’t think Day has figured out staff building which was another Kirby complaint at the beginning.

Anyway was kind of interesting to hear someone from the other side share similar thoughts. Not trying to rehash why OSU is so close to getting over the hump…just bored WFH today wanted to stir up conversation lol!

Why OSU beats Georgia tonight

There are 2 or 3 KEY reasons why OSU beats Georgia tonight. Notice I didn't say UPSET. I said BEATS. #1 Whether you like or DONT like Zack Smith he has access to the coach's film which is different than broadcast video. Whether you like or dislike him he IS a former OSU coach who in his JOB did rather well. His personality, his history, and his mistakes aside he DOES know what he is talking about when it comes to X's and O's.

He gives you the straight stuff and it doesn't matter if you don't like what he has to tell you. He WARNED fans that if OSU didn't play very well they would get beat. He warned bout being sound in coverage and gap integrity BOTH off which led to the 5 explosive plays that cost OSU the game. He says OSU's front 7 has a fairly big advantage with the front 7 vs the UGA OL. Said Bowers WILL make play the D just has to make sure that a 10-15 yard play doesn't turn into a 40+

He said If CJ plays his best OSU wins.

I bring that up because I just saw the Holly Rowe piece today where teammates are saying that CJ has an edge about him he has never shown. That he is now being VERBALLY engaged with accountability. CJ has ALWAYS passed the physical ABILITY for his LEGS to be a weapon. He has just chosen to not take off when that has been available. Could this be a game where CJ runs on the UGA defense because they don't respect that aspect of his game(in fairness, he hasn't run the ball outside of the NW game.) This is a game where IMO he has to take the 5-10 yard scramble to keep OSU moving the ball. Embuka has to have a similar performance or better like he did in the Michigan game.

Best guesses: NFL Departures

Now that the season is essentially over (unless the miracle occurs where OSU backdoors into the playoffs) curious who everyone thinks will be returning. I get very confused on who has extra years with COVID, so I am going to list out the guys who I think could come back next year, but are draft eligible.

There is a scenario where OSU is gutted by early departures, so it will be very interesting who OSU gets to return. I would also be curious if anyone can speak to NIL packages we might put together for some of these guys, I imagine with the misses on some of the big names in recruiting, perhaps there are some funds to allocate to the below.

What's everyone's guesses on the below guys?

Marvin Harrison: Pro
Trey Henderson: Pro

Williams: Likely Pro
Emeka Egbuka: Likely Pro
JTT: Likely Pro
Burke: Likely Pro

Sawyer: 50/50
Hall: 50/50
Ransom: 50/50

D Jackson: Likely returning
Hancock: Likely returning
Simon: Likely returning

I am assuming the following guys will be gone/out of eligibility, but some * might * have a COVID year:

Stover
Eichenburg
Chambers
Proctor
M Jones

12 Team Playoff Hypothetical

I know there are mixed thoughts about the 12 team playoff but look at the hypothetical 12 team playoff from this season. Look at how the matchups lay out and what could happen.

Ohio State gets an SEC team AT HOME in December.

Imagine watching Ohio State play TTUN in the Rose Bowl.

How can you look at this and not think HOLY SHIT this is gonna be amazing.

Guys (@AustinWard, Bobby, etc) - this was a really great and cathartic sesh. JT Barrett coming in to coach QB's - I like alot. Do have a question about Ryan Day and trust. Can you explain that more?I would expect he trusts most of his coaches (i get there might be a few in question). So i was surprised to hear @Birm say that Flemming was one of the few coaches he trusts.

Fully agree about the wider perception of this game. 2 good teams, the previous 2 years don't count to me as well Birm. Lots of little mistakes made that add up. Ryan Day's fire need works for this game. Where was the 2019/20 Day? Last year's GA game Day?

Chip Kelly coming in as an analyst is really great. Day is the CEO, the main play caller, AND has to be work alot with the QB's...I think Wilson was a great coach and a great help to Day.

2024 Team expectations

What are you 2024 team expectations?

  • 12-0

  • 11-1, win over Michigan

  • 11-1, loss to Michigan

  • 10-2

Now that the 2023 season has essentially wrapped itself up, how do you see 2024 going?

For me, 12-0 and I don't think that is at all "unfair". Oregon will have a new QB and Michigan supposedly has 20 draft departures so that only really leave PSU with a lot of preseason hype.

Regardless of what Ohio St returns, they will have their whole OL, plus QB back, talented RBs and WR's. Not to mention out recruiting everyone on the schedule by a wide margin and having at least 3 but probably more like 4 warm up weeks to work things out.

If Day can not beat this Michigan team, there needs to be real talk about his future at Ohio St. His "learning on the job" has seemingly made him a worse, more predictable and conversative coach. That is not who Ohio St hired or who Urban handed the team over to.

What happened with Jesse Micro this season?

The previous two season punter Jesse Mirco was a weapon for the Buckeyes. I think Micro had several excellent punts in the first half of this season.
But, over the final few games, Micro's punts were a liability. Against Michigan, Micro had three chances to pin Michigan inside the ten-yard line, even better, inside the five-yard line. He failed miserably. His 35-yard punts were barely inside the 20-yard line.
The Michigan punter, on the other hand, was a game-changer.
