Post Michigan Game Spygate thoughts

I personally feel this was the first fair Michigan Ohio State game since 2019. Maybe that’s some coping, but I truly believe their sign stealing operation gave Michigan a significant advantage. It was way too elaborate, and they wouldn’t have gone to those lengths and put the program at risk if it didn’t.

I also think this is the best Michigan team Harbaugh has had. Despite the very strong defense, this was maybe the most limited OSU team Ryan Day has had, specifically because of Kyle McCord.

Taking all that into account, it was a very close game that essentially came down to losing the turnover battle (McCord). If I look at the game in a vacuum and not as “the third straight loss to Michigan” i can accept it as a good game between two very good teams. That doesn’t mean it still doesn’t really suck.

But after listening to the survey results on Kings of Columbus, it became very clear the fan base isn’t freaking out nearly as much as I expected. It’s also very clear that the vast majority of people see that this team was very limited by Kyle McCord’s erratic play.

Ohio State has had the best quarterback in the conference for the last decade. Not only did we not have that this year, we didn’t have an OSU caliber quarterback this year. I’m not trying to pile on McCord, but 24 TDs in this offense with these weapons is not going to cut it.

Ryan Day still has a lot to prove and still needs to make some significant changes this off season. But I’m not nearly as stressed out as I was. Whether Kyle takes a big step forward or we go with someone else, Day has to make sure he hits on the QB next season. If he does while maintaining a high level defense I think this 3 year nightmare will end.

Or I could be completely wrong 🤷🏼‍♂️

Like a lot of former players have said, we need people who actually care about this. 3 captains who are all super soft spoken won't cut it. Need some vocal leaders on O and D who won't take this crap and want to run through someone and break them in two. Too many nice guys on both sides of the ball. Team has become too soft and it's true no matter how much we don't like it.

If ever a QB exemplified a coach's mentality...

Still think McCord can make better throws, but McCarthy takes calculated / borderline reckless decisions and they paid off...McCord only makes throws he knows he can make. Seam route to Stover, deep ball to Marv, slant to anyone..checks down smartly to Henderson.

McCarthy threw across his body on 3rd and 6 to set up a 4th and short. He threw a reckless TD pass into double coverage, but it worked.

McCord went into a shell, got nervous like his head coach, and didn't trust his reads.

McCarthy was aggressive, didn't care if he made a mistake, and took chances like his coach(es).

OSU vs Michigan unit by unit comparison

Unit by unit :
Oline: I think this was surprisingly even.
Rb: Michigan. Home run by Henderson never happened. There running was pretty steady and solid and capped by a 22 yard td.
Wr: Us but mainly due to a double teamed Marvin.
TE: Michigan. Cade didn’t have a big impact. Both their TE played well
Qb: this was the big one. Michigan. No mistakes. Run threat.
DL: even. Both put pressure and were solid in the run. Neither made huge plays consistently.
LB; Michigan. Good against the run and solid in the pass game.
CB: OSU. Michigan’s wr’s didn’t do much
Safeties: Michigan. They made more plays than our’s did
ST: Michigan by a lot. Punting stunk. FG missed. Not surprising.

I have Michigan 5 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties.

Qb and ST killed us.

And we just didn’t have the big individual games we hoped for. ‘Veterans got to play veteran’ Day says. They played solid but didn’t get the difference making performances. Explosive plays, sacks, takeaways. Just didn’t happpen.

Day and McCord have to go.

Day is now 1-3 against Michigan. He has to go. We can’t allow him to stay. McCord has to go as well. He can transfer to Bowling Green, Ohio, central Michigan. I don’t care we need to get rid of both of them if we have any chance of being a successful football team next year. if we have an average quarterback back there, we win this game if we have a decent head coach, we win this game.

Does Day deserve “appreciation” from the fanbase?

Let’s discuss it. He is now 1-6 against the Top 5. He does win all the games he should win “automatically”, but has fallen short on the big stage a lot at this point. I know Clemson was a burglary by the refs, but at this point it is not very good.

He has not been able to have a good running game since Dobbins/Sermon/Fields combo left after his first two years. That is on him ultimately to never have a great running game and fail to outrush Michigan 3 years in a row.

Where would Day be without Hartline?? Honest question. Hartline is bringing him the best of the best WRs which helps recruit the QBs in part.

Everyone and their mother knew that Parker Fleming should not have ever been a coach…..he extends him and gives him a raise. He brought in Coombs to begin with.

27-23-24 are the point totals that Day has put up on Michigan in last 3 years as the vaunted offensive genius play caller. We thought it was due to cheating by Michigan. No excuse this year and we get the same result. An O that is not that explosive and not able to produce enough when needed the most.

Most Humbling Tweet I've Seen about this Program

"Michigan has punted the ball once in the second half of the last three Michigan-Ohio State games combined.

Once.

2021:
- TD
- TD
- TD
- TD
- victory formation
2022:
- TD
- punt
- TD
- missed FG
- TD
- TD
- victory formation
2023:
- FG
- TD
- FG
- FG
- victory formation"

9.5 million a year? 2 million a year for a DC? This is the most damning shit I have ever seen. How do you spin continued support of this? I don't know what defense there is left for Day.

It's not a one-game season, but maybe it should be. I don't care much for beating overmatched teams when you get embarrassed in the game. Backing into a 12 team playoff going forward isn't success to me.

There are seemingly 10+ different threads talking about this. Let's see where everyone stands on what you *think* his job security should be, not necessarily where it is.

My biggest worry about Day

This is just a theory I’ve had over the last couple of years. It could be completely of base, so feel free to disregard it.

I’ve spent most of my life studying trauma and working with people that have experienced a lot of trauma, myself included. I’m not going to pretend I know Ryan Day, because I definitely don’t. But he has been pretty open about his life and the tragedy he has experienced, most notably his father committing suicide when he was a kid.

Unless they’ve experienced it personally, most people have no clue how drastically those experiences shape people and change how they react to basically everything. Most notably, people who have experienced significant trauma do NOT handle stress well, and tend to freeze up or shut down in those moments.

I don’t think it’s any secret that Day is very quick to tighten up or coach scared. Again today we saw an interim coach be more aggressive and have a more effective game plan than a 5th year head coach. This is obviously not an isolated incident.

The biggest problem is when it’s rooted in trauma it’s not something you can just change. It’s not like you can just decide that you’re no longer going to react that way anymore. It’s not impossible to overcome, but it can be extreme difficult.

In the end, the “why” he is that way may not really matter. But he has shown time and time again now that that is who he is.

I’m not really sure what the solution is. Maybe it’s as simple as handing over play calling to someone else. That was supposedly the plan last off season and we saw that didn’t last. Maybe this game will be what finally causes him to make that move. But I think it’s clear something has to change.

Or maybe we just need a better QB 🫠

It’s definitely one of those two.
